    Chiller heat exchanger frost

    Hello everybody..

Need your advice. we use 15hp chiller with enclosed shell and tube heat exchanger made of stainless steel. the chilled water is circulated by a pump. Once the pump not working, the water inside the hex frosting, make the hex cracking and therefore the water come into refrigerant line then throwout the compressor.

we try to use protection water flow switch and hi/lo pressure switch, but again we lose the compressor. the switch is working, but frost already there that broken the hex.

please advice what is good protection suitable or any other solution, thank you

Water pump should be continuous operation and cycle compressor off with design leaving water temperature. Check chiller manufacturers set up commissioning data.
Stop the water pump and continue the compressor is a disaster waiting to happen, yes it will creak and groin and split even stainless steel tubes.
Get a half intelligent refrigeration technician to set system up.
