3 phase 220v
I have a customer who has bought a 220v 3 phase heat pump. I have never come across 220v 3 phase and I have spoken to a few electricians who know nothing about it either. Other than using some sort of transformer/converter surely it is not possible to use this in this country(ENGLAND). Has anyone else had any experience with 220v 3 phase rather than 415v 3 phase. There is also no neutral on the Heat Pump. I think these are perhaps for the European/American market and he has been sold the wrong unit. Thanks

Re: 3 phase 220v
Quite common power supply in Norway and some other countries, like USA.
Infact the 120 Vac single phase is derived from 220 Vac three phases.
Neutral is not required.
You may still use it by purchasing a 415/230 three phase autotransformer. It doesn't come cheap, though.

Re: 3 phase 220v
you can change it in a mono 220V ,but you need a condensator to create a thirt line but loose a lot of power, aprox 1/3.
in Belgium we have all of this , mono 220V, 3 fase 220V and 3+1(N) 399V or 400V as they say. it is possible to make from 3 fase 22OV a mono 220V but would not recomand it. it is easyer from 40OV. just watch out for the allignment L1/L2/L3 or the motor is turning the wrong way and cracks to pieces.

Re: 3 phase 220v
I have a 220v 3 phase 8 hp low temp cooler runnining off a phase converter from Phase perfect out of the U.S. Installed now for 3 years not a min problem. It is possible, phase converter cost about $2500.00 US. Hope it helps...

Re: 3 phase 220v
Used to deal with three phase 220v units on print machines in the past.
Some sort of converter/transformer in line with the usual mains.

Re: 3 phase 220v
Thanks everyone. It looks as though the customer as been sold a unit that is not for use in this country, without altering the 3 phase incoming supply.

Re: 3 phase 220v
But do at least frequencies coincide ?
The 415V supply, of course, has neutral and there is 240V phase voltage at the client's place?

Re: 3 phase 220v
I thought Canada already have 220v/3phase like the US why are u still using a phase converter?
I have been looking for someone who has successfully used one in the past. I want to use it for a 1200lb cube machine (Hoshi) i wanna get from ebay/any other auction. Want to use it in West Africa.
More on your experience with the phase converter will be appreciated.

Re: 3 phase 220v
If your motor is internally (or in connection box) connected in delta, you could reconnect it in star and then connect it normally on 380-400V 3phase power supply.
If motor windings are wound for 220V than this star connection would not mean less power.
Question is if motor is suitable for 50Hz frequency.
Could you post picture of motor/compressor nameplate or make and model# of compressor.Last edited by nike123; 02-07-2009 at 06:25 PM.

Re: 3 phase 220v
I go along with Brian_UK, your mate was sold a pup, tip it out and start again.
Any add ons will mean more money that the system is worth.

Re: 3 phase 220v
Yes I agree Magoo. Luckily the suppliers are changing it for a 3 phase 415v, free of charge. Good old Heat Perfector.
Thanks everyone.

Re: 3 phase 220v
If the supplier already offered to exchange, then problem solved.
Otherwise refer to Nike123's good information on STAR-Delta reconfiguration possibilities. Check the motor plates in these situations. Dual range or dual voltage is many times possible.
There are guidelines too on permissible Hertz variation with Voltage.
