Ice Bank / Ice Thermal Storage

    Hi,

Do you know how to calculate an ice bank with chilld glycol?

Do you have any documentation, calculation sheet, software, drawings, etc.

Do you know someone who could make the calculation for a fee. We are in Canada.

    Thank you,

Could you get a rough idea by looking at the specific heat capacity of water and of ice, and the latent heat capacity of the phase change from ice to water. And then use this to work out the mass of ice or water youd need to give enough cooling capacity over the temperature range you want?

    Like,

    2kg of water cooled by 2K gives roughly, 4.2KJ/Kg.K X 2Kg X 2K = 16.8KJ
2Kg of water going through the phase change gives roughly, 334 KJ X 2Kg = 668KJ
    2Kg of ice cooled by 2K gives roughly, 2.1KJ/Kg.K X 2Kg X 2K = 8.4KJ

    Total capacity = 693KJ

Then you need to take into consideration heat transfer through the ice bank container, and any other heat sources.

Theres probably free online calculators you can use.

How important it is to get the correct cooling capacity for your project?

If you are looking at buying an ice builder, I believe you could get a manufacturer like Chester Jensen to provide that information as part of the sales process. https://www.chester-jensen.com/ice-builder

What part of Canada are you in? I know some refrigeration engineers in Canada who might be interested in helping with this process.
