    Start and Run winding

    Hi friends,
I have a question, I surfed the internet but didn’t find proper and clear answer.

In a single phase compressors :

Start winding is just for starting compressor and it is auxiliary ? Or both of Start and Run wiring both of them help compressor to work properly during running ?

    Thanks.

ThermaGroup / ThermaCom did a "Field Compressor Guide" PDF, is also a handy thing if you can find it

    Re: Start and Run winding

    Hi Guys.
I posted the Thermacom manual in 2007 and surprisingly it is still available on Thermacom's Website!
There is a link at the bottom of their homepage. You have to supply some personal info. But If you cannot access it via my link (which i hope works?)
    https://www.mediafire.com/file/ol3bl...group.pdf/file
Then it is still very useful and Bless Thermacom for providing such useful document. Because a good Engineer will always tell you. "If in doubt revert to the basics!"

    Grizzly,
    Still very good information.

Not what was requested, but this link from Brainerd is pretty good for compressors as well

Start winding for start, then switches to run winding.
Run, Start,Common connection on compressor, work out using ohm meter.

I did like the Info on Single Phase Motors. An area I am weak on.
    https://www.allaboutcircuits.com/tex...uction-motors/

This comment bothered me a bit however!

A three-phase motor may be run from a single-phase power source. However, it will not self-start. It may be hand started in either direction, coming up to speed in a few seconds. It will only develop 2/3 of the 3-φ power rating because one winding is not used.

II hope no one relies on this as in my experience it rapidly leads to Motor Failure!

NH3LVR, would take it with a grain of salt.
Just informing what is possible, only MacGiver (or Knighty) would do it to get out of a life threatening situation.

I was just afraid an inexperienced person would try that!

is it bad that as I read that I was thinking you can make a single phase to 3 phase converter doing that (think you need to add a couple of capacitors too)

    :-o
