    Seamless Vs ERW for Condessor

    Hi,
I built a condessor 5 years ago using 3/4" Seamless pipe, My mistake was that I did not galvenized and after 5 years pipe rusted and system is down.

Now I have to re-build condenssor and thinking to use either seamless pipe or ERW. Cost of ERW is ofcourse lower.

Seamless pipe I used/plannning to use is of ASTM A-106 GR-B
ERW is of standard: API 5L & ASTM 53/BSS 1387

In practical real life, have someone used / experienced ERW condessor?

    Would appriciate your input.

    skhan855,
As long as it is suited & rated for pressure, usually 1.5 to 2mm thick.
    Go for 2mm.
Stainless steel in nice if you can afford, do not have to galvanize then.

I it cheaper to make, than to buy a new condenser from China or Thailand?

    China offering 1.5 MM ERW.
In Pakistan standard is seamless 50 MM (ID) x 4 MM thick with open to air type condessor, like in picture

Please also suggest if close cooling tower would be more efficiant then atmospheric cooling towers?

    skhan,
For this application I think you would use what you normally use for longevity.
Then galvanize, which will hold a thicker coating of gal due to its weight.
In our part of the world it would be stainless steel, as does not rust, appears not to foul tubes due to smooth surface.

Also in our part of the world an evaporative condenser would be used, as would take a fraction of the foot print of your set up, less chemicals, much more efficient as coil flooded with water & VSD on condenser fans, not relying on a draught of breeze, use less water.
On hot humid days I think it would work better.
Would be interesting what condensing capacity you would require to size up & compare.
Stainless steel casing, stainless steel coil, keep chlorine away.

The hard thing to compare, as labor cost in the west is expensive so we do things differently.
For example most systems automatic, with no one except outside contractor looking after system.

I wlll share pictures of dismantelling of my cooling tower tomorrow.
SS would be very expensive option
