You can a different bottle for hard water areas. Also you could fit scale fighter on the water mains.

Customer won't pay for one, normally 2 a year is enough...when engineers bother to change them!

bottles should be removed and flushed out- ensuring the drain gauze at the bottom is free, also when filling the current draw should be monitered to determine the length of electrode- as they wear, obviously it was serviced by a lazy fooker- either strip out and see how much crap is in the bottle or look for the pile of rusty crap where he flushed it through, also strainers should be checked too

i had some water test one time , our local ( only) water supplier , said it was ok
i wanted to know about the conductivity of the water
and what was in it , having a site with the same problem . where as other sites a few miles away did not .
some customers are miffed when they are told that the bottle is a consumable item , as it makes steam( humidity ) at its expense.
trouble is the crud , can hold the drain valve open so it wastes water as it never fills up .
allthough it is quite interesting to hear that another type of bottle can be got (hard water)
we are blessed with soft water in jersey , so your kettle and washing machine lasts a lot longer.
you could try altering the set point for humidity so it works less and lasts a bit longer.( if ok to do so)
ive seen them turned off altogether , horror of horrors , and a very dry room .
when they are done , they are done imho
    its just a expense

And don't forget the little sprinkle of salt to get the new bottle up and running quickly.
