R502 Replacement.

Got a Frozen Food Coldroom on R502 which due to leak on remote condensor has lost gas.

A company has been previous to my visit but no gas ID label is on unit. Exp valve is R502 so I will have to assume that R502 is what is in the system. Customer does not recall what engineer did on previous visit.

If I use R404A what oil do I need and do I need to do anything with expansion valve i.e orifice size (not sure of size at mo)?

Or is there another gas I could use that involves no oil change and minimal adjustments R407A for example?

Hi lucas.

Personally, now adays I don't like the retrofits.

With 404A you need to use POE oil.

For flushing Contact your refrigerant supplier.
Capacity don't change but you have to install new TEV for 404A - the same capacity.
As oil and dirt stays at the bottom of the receiver. It need to be replaced and of course 404A compressor.

Pressure controlls will have to be re adjusted.

Just to expand on chemis valid points Retrofitting is the way to go long term.However FX10 (R408A) will drop in the place of R502 with minimal problems,Available from HRP etc.( phase out period applies).

As Mark says, R408A is the short term drop in replacement and i have used in on loads of occasions and works fine.

At the end of the day to convert to R404 is going to cost and with the age of the equipment is it really worth it. I have so far never conveted a unit to 404 purely because of the cost compared to the short term life of that age of a unit. Either scrap the whole unit & but a new more reliable one or just use 408

Why can't you have a look at the last engineers report sheet to see what work he carried out on the system? Surely the customer should have a copy?

No report history available otherwise I would of read it.

Thing that amazes me is that the unit is not even labeled for R502 nor are there any signs of labels being removed. Just cannot understand why people cannot take time to label things!

Will suggest customer has to look at new equipment but for now go for the drop in option. Unit at least 12-15 yr old so cost has to be a factor here, so as ever it is up to the customer and as usual they will go for cheapest option of course guaranteed.

stateside 502 replacement most common now is 507 , poe retro, same valve most applications

Why don't you try ISCEON 79 its not HCFC based like R408A but it can be used with same oil type that is in system.

For the rare occasion where we encounter R502 and have to change to the refrigerant, we use HP 80 = R402a just drop in, no oil or tev change, works perfect, in holland is is a gas witch will be phased out in future.

BTW wats wrong with selling a new and modern installation.

FX10 works well as a drop in, just remember to charge system to correct operating pressures, i have found systems in the past charged to a full sight glass have been way over charged

R402a R402b R403 R408a Are all pretty much the same in the feild in my experience. Depending on the size of the system if it is quite small I would advise the customer to prepare himself to pay for the cost of a new system in the next couple of years. If however it is larger I would sugest looking at changing it over to a longer term replacement. I recently was involved with a R502 Blast Freezer that had been changed over to R22 by company policy and then changed over to Isceon 59(R417a) It works really really well and out performs it's 25 year old design spec. It is quite a big blast freezer though.

why would someone want to use HP80. too high of a discharge pressure, causes allot of gtief in the summer time with high head problems, anything i service that was 502 and now HP80, needs a sprinkel on the condenser in summer

go to 404 or 507 (less glide) and POE oil, no need to change TEV
