    compressor coil

I was looking at a 1/5 hp compressor and noticed two extra 1/4" connections coming out of the side near the bottom. I have not run into this since I was in school, and for the life of me, cannot remeber what it's purpose is. If I remeber correctly, it is a coil that sits in the crankcase, that is independent of the refrigeration system.

It is called an 'oil cooler'. Normally one would pass the discharge gas through a condenser, then through the oil cooler, then again through a condenser, and finally route it to the receiver or expansion device. The two condensers may also be the same condenser with two loops.

These constructions are used in heat pumps, so that compressor heat is also dumped in the target to be heated, maximizing efficiency. They are also used when no airflow over the compressor is possible.
