R-409A is a interim R-12 replacement. As such due to P/T characteristics, not a good choice for your temperature range, so NOT better thatn 404A in this application. :)
hmm.. so what temp is capable of?
If you have an existing system using "502", for instance, you will not acheive system design or capacity with an R-12 equivalent. If you are spec'ing a new system, you will find that R-12 or equivalent equipment will be impractical in terms of input vs. output, and typically such equippment is not rated for such very low temp applications.
Pick your application, or check your equipment and just go to the books. You may inherently find that it won't do the thingy !!!! :)
R-409A is a medium and low temperature R-12 replacement. I would consider it for applications for evaporating temperatures of no less than -10 degF.

Mathematically, the refrigerant is capable of absolute zero. ;) However, the equipment that it is typically employed in (R-12 equivalent) is usually not rated for employment at such low operating ranges as you are speaking of.
soo... I should expect evapo temps around -30c / -10f ...
R-409
has a nasty like problem.. Its got a 12 degree refrigerant guide. Its not a good one to choose for a freezer. Changing to over is the only choice.
