Heat Reclaim from a 9 kw a Copeland Scroll Condensing unit
What is the best arrangement for using the Discharge Super Heat to heat domestic hot water.
We have a 9 kW copeland Scroll air cooled condensing unit using R404a on a milk cooling ice bank.
What is the best type of Refrigerant to Water heat changer to use?
Would a Fan speed controller be needed?
All comments and advice appreciated.

Have a look here. This kind of units will do the job for you.
Speed controller or pressure control for the fans is needed.

I've fitted a Fabdec heat recovery on a Mueller dx, only about 3000L, was really impressed, comp was about 5 or 6 hp and heat reco tank was about 300L and you could stand and watch the temperature go up on it, it was the sole source of hot water for tank washing with no electric top up.
Ideally you'd need to fit a fan speed control, a discharge pipe muffler and some bypass valves. But the one i fitted only had a muffler (needed to for the warranty from Fabdec) as it was suppplied and spec'd by the milking parlour guy.

I have checked out the Eureka Heat Recovery Systems web site
Have to check which is it best to pre cool the milk with bore hole water.
This would reduce the refrigeration load by at least 60%.
Or to use the Discharge Super heat to produce hot water, with out any pre cooling of the milk.
Maybe pre cool and recover less super heat for heat the water.
Any thoughts

Pre cool the milk first and use the water for volume washing the parlour and drinking water for the cows, they'll drink more if its warm, so i'm told. Its free cooling!
Then use the fridge system to cool the milk and pre heat the water for plant and tank washing.
There was an article on it in the farmers weekly a few months back, no actual figures but the farmer said he was saving on run time on the fridge system and electric on water heating, had four units connected to heat recovery, two on dx tank and two on ice builder.

Hi Monkey, you have brought about water usage after pre-cooling "Cows drinking more" many moons ago there was a lot of research on this, it was found that cows do prefer to drink warm water, but it was also found that some cows are more inteligent than others. The smarter cows would only drink around milking time (warm water), milk production fell.
So the big question for the farmer, are his cows bright or not.
As far as heat recovery goes, there are many ways to skin a cat.
One of the major problems, is pressure drops in the discharge (with desuperheaters). This can adversely efffect the running of the refrigeration unit. (high head pressures), this is very rarely seen, as when we look at the plants the water being heated is normally cold. As the water warms "the shrinking effect" on the discharge refrigerant reduces. The shrinkage (contraction) over comes the heat exchanges natural pressure drop.

Harry Noblet, now theres a name i haven't heard for years!
I'm self employed now but used to work for a main agent of milk tanks, who used to sell to Noblet refrigeration. I seem to remember one of his rusty looking transit vans being parked in our yard when my boss took some dealers on a trip to the factory :)
