Dear All
kindly i would like to ask if i can make a small air condition project for 5m3 area using 1/3 or 1/2 HP refrigerator compressor
Best regards

WHY?
Just buy a cheap 2.6kW AC and have done with it! :D

Not really, a refrigerator compressor has a duty of maybe 350W and you need something around 2600W or more.

I would say yes, but i don't know how.
5m3 equates, using the old rule of thumb to 361w so Brian's 350w is nearer than a 2.6kw el cheepo.

Hi mmtronic
As it may be known the rule of thumb for cooling load estimation is 150 W/m2 for ordinary room and 190 W/m2 for computer room. Therefore, according to ur project case the minimum cooling capacity is 2.25 kW corresponding to almost 0.9 kW (1.25 HP). Accordingly, ur proposal of 1/3 or 1/2 HP will be undersized.
Thank u :)
kind regards

These rules of thumb are only valid in your country. In our country, they should be oversized.

at risk of not succeding (The best learning tool imo) I would say try geting two 1/2HP units and making a dual compressor system, if one has the parts why not play to see what creature you can create :)

Hi mohamed
when i read ur previous post mentioning area 5m3 i supposed u meant the room area (5*3m) so the previous calculation was based on that. However, when i read another uncompleted thread in which u mentioned that the room size (2.8*1.3*1.3 m) corresponding to 5 m3 as volume not area i realize that ur room area is 3.64 m2. Anyhow, the new calculation is
cooling load = 150 W/m2 * 3.64 m2 = 0.546 kW
Compressor input power (roughly) = 0.546 / 2.5 (average COP) = 0.218 kW = 0.29 HP....that means the 1/2 HP could be sufficient for ur project.

Hi Peter_1
Thanks for ur input. I know the site location "latitude and site orientations" has an important role in the cooling load estimation. However, this rule of thumb which i have mentioned is a roughly estimation for load calculation and is not a precise method. It just gives some light for load calculation.

Dear Mohamed ,
Thx so much for ur help ....ur last messege make me so happy cos u confirm the idea with using 1/2 hp compressor ( reducing the total power consumption in watt ) for area (2.8*1.3*1.3m) and the next step to me as i mention in the stopped thread is to calculate the length of copper pips in condenser and evaporator for this project ...........i need help in this part to complete design and have the whole image for the project and to start making it and any comment for my project will be appreciated .
Best regards
