I've got a cannondale R500, but I think it's a little bit under 1 HP :) . Wouldn't even cool my fridge with that, let alone a crate of carslberg on a desert island.

Yamaha first started in business manufacturing pianos! Hence the tuning forks for there logo. They have progressed over many years to making all sorts of things, engines, electronic components (CD Writers and sound systems a speciallity) jet skis, bikes...you name it - they probably make it!!!

Anyway, whats up with you lot? Over 800 registered people and only 4 replies so far! Surely, there must be lots more bikers out there amongst you?

Well, I hate to say it Frank, but......

I am now officially a 'sad git', I've just bought a BMW with two wheels. no they are NOT both on one side with a jack under the other :)

It works out cheaper to run a motorbike than a car for transport to and fro work so hey-ho Frosty I claim the fifth reply and want my prize :p

Out and about in the big white van today fixing customers A/C left right and centre. Just loved it when the traffic started to get backed up and noticed a "BIKER" coming up between the lanes.
Nudged the van over and reduced the gap - hey - guess what ? the biker gave me 2 fingers!!!

Sad gits!!

(Only joking guys!!)

(Those London bikers surely do deserve it with their attitudes)

Hi Alpha,
If you can work out how a Vector or SL Multitemp works then you are already 80% there. At the end of the day all fridges work on the same principal, you will find there are a lot of current reefer engineers on line and also 100's of us that have made the switch to commercial.

PS stick with the reefer stuff it's a lot less grief :D

Hi Guys,
For all you two wheeled petrol heads out there there may be an ideal job. At one of the shows in Birmingham a couple of years ago (Can't remeber if it was CV or Fridge show) Carrier (Transport side) were showing a motorcycle that they were using for engineers to use as a quick response vehicle.
Carried a few tools in the side pods, Gauges, set of screwdrivers, set of adjustables, valve keys ect but havn't heard anymore or how they got on or if they were ever used.

If anyone has heard let me know

Regards

The last time I had a bike (and the first) was in 1974. I used it as the main transport during the hot summer of 1975 - great, but I had to trade it in for 4 wheels to transport the family when the weather turned cold and i've never looked back.
They frighten me to death now and I wouldn't swap the Volvo :) :)

And what size am I limited to?Not 100% sure Abe about the requirements nowadays but your best bet is to contact a Bike Training School for info, check in the Yellow Pages or Thompsons.

It rusn something like - start on a 50cc for CBT Compulsory Basic Training, then you can move up to 125cc, more training then allows you to go for a larger bike.

Unless, of course, you already have some bike on your licence....

Tried to post this yesterday but didn't work...

You have a couple of different routes as you are (probably) over 21 - 125 test or direct access (DAS). If you are under 21 you can't do DAS.

Before you're allowed on the road on anything you have to do your compulsory basic training (CBT). After that you can ride a moped or 125cc bike with L plates, limited to 15bhp (top speed about 80mph), no pillions or motorways. If you pass the test on the 125 then you can ride anything up to 33bhp with no L-plates or other restrictions for 2 years, after which the 33bhp limit goes too. You can buy bikes which are much more powerful e.g. 500/600cc with restrictor kits, so after 2 years you pull out the kit and thave the same bike but 70/80/90etc. BHP. If all you do is commute round town or aren't bothered about lots of motorway miles, a small biek may be all you need anyway, and you can squeeze 90mpg out of a 125.

Direct access gets you to your unlimited licence in one step. Downside is you have to pass your test on a bike of over 54bhp (usually 400cc upwards), but unlike the 125 you can't just go and ride it - you can only ride it with L plates and an instrctor following you. The test is tougher too (rightly so). Downside in practical terms is you get your licence with less time on the bike, so the test is harder to pass and it does open the door for numpties. Mind you, plenty of them in cars...

Step one is CBT no matter what you want, so might as well get on with it! You can find out more once you're there. Cost should be around £60-70 plus bike hire about £30 unless you want to buy a 125/moped straight away and use it (a bike shop will deliver it to the training centre for you).

I must admit one thing that I would like to see as a general rule..

That is that EVERY car driver should have spent some time on two wheels, motorised, during the early spring or autumn. That way they would be more aware of the road conditions when sat inside their metal boxes on wheels.

Ok so here's my collection and I haven't been without a bike since I was 12 yrs old, so a little biased.

99 Triumph Tiger 900 (in the best colour Yellow) 885cc efi - 67,000 miles and counting

1981 Suzuki GN400 Red Canadian Import - four stroke single 85 mpg anyone?? For sale anyone need a cheap winter hack? PM me.

1980 Suzuki GN400 Black Canadian Import - customised to loook like an Arial HT trials

1999 Jinlun 125cc - for the learners in the family.

On it's way a late 1940s Douglas 350cc - Blue

Mini 1000cc needs a clutch

Ford Ranger 2003 needs front wheel bearings !

Highly recommended is the advanced motorcycle training - be honest we all got bad habits and don't pay attention. This will improve your riding (and reduce your insurance premiums) - I just got quoted £220 fully comp for a multi bike policy for all four together, fantastic.

Did anyone out there get hassle from your company for riding a bike on business? Mine just banned biking on the grounds of 'health and safety' - even though it's probably saved them a fortune on fuel\parking \conjestion charges.....don't get me started GGRRRRR!!!

Two wheels best, fours wheels if I must and you insist and if HSE say so, but not my choice.

Cheers

I have a friend who claims to have originated the Harley "Fat Boy".

As the story goes, he was sitting in a bar in Sturgis having a few drinks when someone told him that Willy G. Davidson was out in the parking lot and wanted to meet him. He said "yeah... sure" and continued drinking.

About an hour later he wandered out to the parking lot to find Willy G. admiring the modifications he had made to his bike.

Shortly thereafter, out came the Harley Fat Boy, which looked a lot like his bike.

I don't know how true it is, but it's a good story and he tells it well. :D

For all you petrol heads i would like to introduce you to road legal quads. mines a yamaha yfz 450 0-60 in 4.5 secs and you can ride it on a car licence and at only 300 quid fully comp insurance, cheapest and most fun of getting a speed thrill on four wheels dont you think. I pray for snow.

In my neighbours garden, I see an old BMW R600 (probably around 1975). It seems to be in excellent condition. Good body. A while ago, I heard his son puttering around the garden and it sounds good.

Can you still get parts for these bikes?SOrry, forgot to post this earlier...

Good spares source here..

I'm thinking about parting with the old BMW K100RS (1984) and buying a brand new old pattern (India) Royal Enfield 500cc Bullet.

They used to be one of 'the bikes' to be around when I was somewhat younger and it's the nearest I can get to my old 500cc Norton single of days gone by.

Thanks Pooh. Mine has the dual Mikuni 38mm carbuerators.
It's a 1994, so it's been around a while.
I've had three normal maintenance valve adjustments on her and her top speed is only about 130, but you're absolutely correct, she's a beast in the curves.:D

I've owned the Japanese made motorcycles and they are nice, but my Ducati weighs 404 lbs. (dry weight) and my Aerostich kneepads have seen their share of scrapes when I was a younger lad.
My wife won't let me drive like that now.:p

I thought so.
I remember the old 888's had that same look in the rear. Those trellis type alloy frames are unmistakable Ducati. Very nice.
I like the 'tricked out' effect you've given the Monster.

Hi all
1979 Triumph T140 Bonneville Custom, always in a constant state of rebuild/modification. Its last incarnation was around 77bhp/150kgs wet weight, which though good for a bike pushing 30years is cold comfort when an R6 passes me and nearly sucks me out of my boots !

Two Harleys - a 1963 Duoglide ( Panhead ) that i've owned for nearly 20 years and a 1998 Sportster 1200cc that i bought last July cause the Pan was playing up and the wife was fed up of me sulking without a bike that worked.

OK guys, like someone else said right at the beginning of this very long thread “bikes aren’t really my thing”. However, I have owned and ridden the following:

NSU Quickley moped when I was a kid (remember them? – death traps)
BSA 250cc Tiger Cub (used to get through more oil than petrol – another death trap).
Basically I've been in 4 wheels since I was 17 - far better for attracting members of the opposite sex - and having it!!Anyway I digress. Whilst on a holiday in Canada last year my son & I spotted a chopper in Unionville (nr Markham) that looked remarkably like the the Indian Larry tribute bike that we had seen built one of the Discovery Channel programmes. The attached pictures are of the bike as we saw it and one of a TV screen shot of the real thing. On the day the some of the bye standers claimed it wasn’t the “real McCoy”. We begged to differ and a heated argument took place. What to you guys reckon? No doubt the USA/Canadian members will have a better view on this one. Appologies for the porr quality mobile phone photos.

sorry to correct you but you either had a Triumph 250 Tiger Cub or a BSA C15 250 the engine was the same but with some slight frame mods. I have a 1960 BSA C15 in the garage but unfortunately it got submerged in the floods last year and I have not had chance to get it back on the road.

Hi Pooh/Ian. As I said in my original post "I don't do bikes" so I bow to your superior knowledge. We are talking some 38 years ago so the old grey cells are struggling to recall the details. I think it must have been a Triumph since I do remember it as a Tiger Cub & not as a C15 250. Either way if it had the same engine it must have leaked oil the same which ever version. I can recall riding it Willesden tech on my day / evening release days and returning to a puddle of oil under the machine which was leaking from the crankcase oil feed to the external push rods? (am I correct in this description?). I seem to remember that the previous owner(s) had bodged a repair on the bolt which had been "araldited" in place due to a stripped thread - hence the leak (no AA checks in those days - It only cost me £17).

Oh what fun when you only had to pay your mum £5 a week keep and spent the rest on beer, women and an annual holiday away with the lads.

I take it you are not an expert on American Choppers?

Guys,
Have a look at these bikes, not everyone likes it, but its a special in all ways! It may never beat Hondas, Yamahas, Suzukis or Harley, but it does make you feel different and special, it classic piece.Available in various capacity, max is only 500cc, enough to get the feel!
And the good thing is that its much cheaper than any grand bikes(Approx $3000 u.s.).do take look at pics!

Out and about in the big white van today fixing customers A/C left right and centre. Just loved it when the traffic started to get backed up and noticed a "BIKER" coming up between the lanes.
Nudged the van over and reduced the gap - hey - guess what ? the biker gave me 2 fingers!!!

not on american choppers as they are not designed to go round corners or stop when you want them too, I am more for the riders bikes as well as the classics , 1963 Ducati Brisk, 1960 BSA C15, and a 1960 Vespa VNA 125 Scooter, as well as the two Ducati Monsters the boss and I ride all year round.

I beleive once a biker always a biker no matter what you are riding, it really annoys me that some of the guys I ride with wont acknowledge scooter riders because in their minds they are'nt proper bikers, my question is has it got two wheels and an engine then it is a motorbike.

I was a Rocker back home. I built two nice Norton Dominator cafe racers-Manx seat, Manx dropped bars etc. Was in the 59 club and travelled to London from Scotland.
Had a Royal Enfield Continental GT 250 as well.
A '59 Tiger Cub, a Tiger 100 cafe racer, a '49 BSA Bantam, a Norton Big 4, a Norton 16H, a suzuki gt 350, a Yamaha xs 250 and my last bike was a Yamaha fj1200.

I love bikes, but haven't had one since coming to the US.

I have a Husaberg FE450 enduro bike which is designed for off road usgage. This is a great hobby
as the chances of getting knocked off my bike on the road by car drivers is limited as cars cannot go where my bike can. As I live by Salisbury Plain I have a large area where I can go riding. The great thing about an enduro bike is that you jump 20ft in the air and land without breaking anything on the bike.

Got my new R1 last July, saw it in the window of a yam dealer in Melton Mowbray in England. Just saw this flash of red and black as I passed by the shop window! Anyway, came back a few hours later and went to the shop - fell in love with the bike - 08 R1 in Haga santander livery. Couldn't keep away...sleepless nights...had to go back and do the deal. Got it on a sat morning and just couldn't keep off it. 4 months later and the paints peeling off the panels that get hot and I'm pissed! Phoned Yam dealer and got it in for a respray!!!!! Brill, business as usual. Guess what...4 months later and the bleedin paints peelin off again. Angry phone calls to the Yam dealer quotin sale of goods act 1972 (ammended) and I get the original panels put back on, with a brand new petrol tank - competion white - fab. Im still waitin for the £800 refund for the non-standard paint job, but I'll get it in the next week or two. Gonna put the money towards a nice hol in Jamaica next year. Motto: the quality of the original Yam panels cannot be beaten, I was unlucky, apparently this rarely happens, but it did, and it caused me untold grief!!! The bike is back to standard, albeit with an R&G tail tidy, a solo rear seat conversion and a pair of Michellin Pilot Power 2CT tyres, and its now the dogs danglies...
