If my memory serves me right, my grandmother had a Fedders window air conditioner that the entire unit was inside the window. In the winter you simply closed the window behind the unit. You never took the unit out. Is this still being made?

.

They do make versions of them.
In the UK they are less popular and are referred to as "Window rattlers".

I see them installed in a hole specially built in conservatory walls to help keep
them cool in summer and warm in winter.

They are not that popular but serve a purpose.
