Shaft alignment (bragging :))

Alignment on an XRV 204 today after compressor replacement.

On initial check the motor was so far off the laser couldn't measure it.
Didn't have my dials in the car so had to start by using a caliper and the Mk1. eyeball.
Got it straight, then had to lift the motor 2mm before the laser could handle it.

Took me 4 hours, but figured I'd get it as best as possible to hopefully not having to adjust it again after I run it warm next week.

I love using the laser alignment tool, but this time, I think I would have saved some time if I had had my dials available.

Sometimes the Old style skills still come in handy.
Especially the ones that are rarely taught nowadays.
Howden's have a big old lump of a motor to be moving about.

numbers are quite nice ... hope they remain after
warm run ...

I have no experience with laser alignment tool
and to be honest old fachioned way with
analog or digital dials and two equations
for calculation for many years were good enough
to perform good alignment.

Must say, in my time laser was quite expensive tool
especially when available shims were only made of
beer or sprite&coke cans ...

To measure difference in 0,01, 0,02 or 0,03 mm
and then use the thinnest shim of 0,05mm or 0,10mm
was not the way ...
I believe you know what I want to say....

I think laser probably 50% quicker, maybe more, as only have to get sideways move once at the end.
Dial indicator whatever method, have to get sideways right before altering up/down.
mince using laser, difficult to go back to dials as so much better (in my opinion).
Records can be stored & emailed to client/ office.
You can buy a cheap laser for less than $3000 US.
Some have steps that almost anyone can follow.
Latest can download app & use on phone or tablet.

Yes, the old way was very accurate, the laser device is really faster and more accurate, also measures the loose feet of the engine that the dial can not accurately measure.
I use Pruftechnik and satisfied.

You can get a pretty good laser for $3000! :)
The one I use I think was around $1000 5 years ago.

I had a guy do an alignment on a similar setup, all he did was aligning stuff around the world.
The laser had a camera and was connected to his phone, so when he was done I asked him if he could send me a report.
he pushed a few buttons on the laser, punched in my e-mail and 5 seconds later I had a 3 page detailed pdf report, with pictures (yes the laser had a camera on it as well) in my inbox.

but that one cost over $12000 :)
