View Full Version : Replacement of an Danfoss ICM 25 Module.

Hi Guys!
I have poured over various Danfoss PDF's online and cannot find the answer to my Query!
I am looking to replace a suspect ICM 25 Module. Only when I look at Table 2 there are 3 options.

ICM 25-A
ICM 25-A33
ICM -B
I am struggling to find out what these derivatives mean.
Can anyone Help Please?

Hi Guys.
I may off, having dug further found the answer?
It would appear each derivative has a different flow rate through the valve.
A = 7.0 gal/min
A33 = 0.23 gal/min
B = 13.92 gal / min
So would anyone know if there are markings on the existing Valve to tell me which option we already have fitted?

All I've found is that there should be an ID tag around the spindle hidden by the ICAD motor.

It seems I may have to re-visit site unless the original purchase paperwork can be found. b
But that was back in 2012.
So I suspect the office will of thrown the details away by now.

My Grizzly check this out.
Also depends what duty valve in in, expansion valve, regulating valve.
Do you have any system conditions, refrigerant, load of evaporator?

Can you order options available & return what is not used.
Still got to be cheaper to order all options than another site inspection & possible remove insert to inspect if nameplate missing.

Thanks Mr Ranger.
I will check out what you have attached.
However this is a Ammonia Flooded Spiral Freezer System with the ICAD ICM acting as a liquid line fill Valve.
By throttling the fill rate into the Surge Drum based upon the EKC 347 Liquid level controller.
So I know it wont be the 0.23Gal/min option.
And I am already leaning towards the 13.92 gal /min option because of the control settings I have in the ICAD.
The plant is still operational so I have time on my side.
I was hoping that someone would have an easier option of identification that's all.
Only I have had to go to site and nurse the plant back to its working levels. Because they have lost control of the levels and working pressures.
To be fair there are a couple of Guys there that are really clued up.

Sadly though they are not always available. And the Finger pokers take over!
You get some very interesting scenarios then.

Page 3 shows about nameplate & pictures of 20mm valve variants.
Using Danfoss Coolselector can narrow things down a fair bit.

Got you my friend.

I know I have a ICM25 so -
All ICM sizes except ICM 20 have a stainless steel
ID tag located around the valve stem on the top
cover which the ICAD mounts on.
Applies.

So if all else fails then it may well be a trip to site.
I will let you know How I get on!

Knowing our luck you'll need a magnifying glass or a brass rubbing kit. ;-)

Its just as well I did not go for my gut feeling, as I had a result today.
The site Engineering manager who is really handy himself. Offered to remove the ICM actuator and look for the tag, after I had explained the dilemma!
It transpires that we have a ICM 25A so its the lowest flow of the lot.
But Hey at least the Job can move on and I have saved a 260 mile round trip.

The ICM valve with the ICAD motor can be used as an electronic expansion valve when using the “A” insert as the “A”insert has a deep Vee port cone to give a very controlled liquid injection function . The larger inserts Band C are a more open Vee port cone for control purposes such as suction pressure etc . The A33 cone is 33% of the A cone capacity in theory

Also remember that the 1st generation ICAD had a problem with keeping the closed position.

I found that for the DN25, they would loose the "zero" over approx 6-8 days.

Larger valves would be approx 14-20 days.

a quick calibration fixed it for another week, if you also twisted the ICAD 3mm off center after a calibration it would hold for a few days extra :)

The issue was still there on some of the early 2nd generation ICADs, not as pronounced as on the 1st gen.

There was a software upgrade a year or two of the 2nd gen, and that seems to have eliminated the issue.
If I remember correctly, the upgrade was that if the valve was at 1-2% opening degree, it would remain shut, and if it stayed at 1% over x amount of time the ICAD would do an extra turn towards closed.
