This is a Volvo V50 that was low on refrigerant. Evacuated and tried to fill it. Compressor clutch kicks in and spins the compressor but no work is done. High and low are not moving at all. Not the slightest bit. What could be the problem here?

Not sure charlie may tell us,seem to remember something on new style compressors that work differently either thst or the compressor is kaput?

Gauges connected fully?

Are you sure that the clutch is in? Standing pressure above low pressure switch?

Yes to all of that. Never seen anything like it. Compressor feels normal when spinning it by hand. Maybe some kind of valve problem internally?

If its on 134a i would say the compressor is faulty

Not sure if it applies to your case but Vauxhall's would do similar although there was a slight pressure difference when running.
They had a bypass valve held in with a circlip on the body of the compressor which was faulty. This part could be replaced.

Cheers,
Andy.

Pre 2006 normal comp comp is shot or someone has removed the orifice
2007 onwards run either a standard clutch or clutchless ie constant plumper if the wiring tucks in behind the face of the clutch its a standard system pretty rare for a Volvo comp to go bang unless when its was gassed it was filled with liquid and started right up as suction port close to comp

I have spoken to a guy that renovates these compressors and he explained the reason for this behavior. It's a malfunction in the internal valves. Like both suction and discharge is open at the same time and compressor just pumps internally. Replacement is only option but no crap should be in the system. I should look at the oil in the old compressor to be sure. Also measure how much oil of course. This info might help others.
