R600a

Hello all,

I am after a bit of advice on R600a, i have passed my F-Gas cat 1 C&G qualification and i have recently been approached by a small business to join them and work on the fridges (mainly 600a units) when i told them i have my fgas but i have never worked on 600a systems they said "you dont need any qualifications or training to work on 600a systems, you just need to be careful"

Is this the case? i assumed you would at least need F-Gas and then maybe even the hydrocarbon course?

I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong but....

R600a is a refrigerant so your fgas covers it.

The hydrocarbon courses are a very good safety at work course to enable you to work on hydrocarbons safely. You might also find that you are unable to buy hydrocarbons at BOC, for eg.

When we done our a2l hydrocarbon course we where advised f gas not required nothing was required this was beginning of the year at a well respected trainer all the senior guys questioned this but yes we where told no qualifications no f gas just need to be competent engineer the only stipulation was needed a boc card to buy
it however this is not quite true as we purchase our 600 290 etc without ever being asked for my card ....mad or what

There is a bit of confusion regarding HC's

F-gas is a requirement for working with refrigerants and it does
cover the use of HC's. To work with HC's solely, technically you
do not need a qualification because HC's are not covered by Kyoto
or Montreal.

But and this is a big but you might not be able to buy HC's without
the HC ticket and you can't get a HC ticket without the F-gas qual.

So in short you can work with R600a, and your company can buy HC
refrigerant on their ticket.

BOC no longer do a HC card it is now a City & Guilds qualification, to
get that qualification you must hold a F-gas qualification.

Bit of a catch 22 :)

If you are not trained to work with HC's and you do something
wrong and there is an accident, well you can imagine the consequenses.

If you do the training you at least learn the right way to work with them.

I would be reluctant to work for a company that refuses to train engineers
but I now work in training so I might have a biased opinion.

No, I'm with you Rob, that was one of the reasons I first asked about the HC's as the company I was talking to about it was saying there is no training for it, its just common sense, which didn't sound right to me.

I decided not to go through with them as they are more domestic refrigeration and I'm not really interested in that.

I'm trying to make the jump from commercial into supermarket but a lot of the places want experience in supermarket fridge which is a bit of a downer.
