Anyone know of a subcooling valve similar to the sporlan BS series? Meuller bought the rights to the Sporlan valve and uses in the milk coolers but I wondered if anyone else made one....Danfoss maybe. Haven't found one yet.

It's amazing what the web brings up, looking for info on your question I found the Sporlan patent application

Hi Brian_UK
an interesting read and concept, are they for critical charge systems?

You would think Danfoss or whoever would be on to it if it were worthwhile, or maybe I"m missing something, as I don't know what situation it was designed for.

The patent was put in in 1968, even I was young then!

I think the old Westinghouse heat pumps called Hi Re Li used a sub cooling exp valve on them also ...only seen it when on factory course though in Canada.

I think they were mainly for preventing high discharge temperatures...

Sporlan Y1037 valve..

Yup, here is a diagram I made of it:

9890

Sporlan licensed it to Meuller for milk coolers and it extends the operating range down somewhat. Westinghouse used it in HPs but most techs couldn't get their heads around controlling subcooling rather than superheat and the bulb is on the liquid line prior to the pancake HX in the accumulator.

If I could buy the valve, it would have to be from Meuller hence the desire for another manufacturer

Ranco makes a small one. Danfoss used to make one but its not in the content of my current catalog.
