There is more than what meets the eye there...

My money is on the solution being somewhere in the shadows.
On the contraption there are hard shadows telling our brains how it is fitted together, giving us a 3D view if you like, but on the floor the shadows are soft. The chap tries to keep low and to keep his shadow away from the "unit", when he stands up you can see how he casts a soft shadow on the wood whilst the hard shadows are still there.

Very well done but my guess is that the hard shadows been painted on.
