yes, I installed a virtual machine on win7, it worked not very well, sometime it cracked. I have a very old notebook, but too old to use on jobsite.

I don't remember it being mentioned that it was a 64bit OS, but if it was, I would have mentioned that the software is designed specifically for XP, so if it is running in a Windows 7 environment, firstly it would need to be a minimum of the Professional version and in 32bit. To my knowledge, all industry software is designed primarily for XP but will run in a Windows 7 (32 bit) environment. Personally, I can't see any reason why it shouldn't run in a 64bit OS but not having tried it, I would never guarantee it.
There is no version of that software designed for 64bit, so if it won't run, then unfortunately, it won't run. A later version of that software will only include additional unit models only; they are not software companies, so their only interest is in making the information available to those who need it. As a general rule, dealers don't normally use 64bit in their systems, usually XP. If they are running Windows7, it would be expected to be the 32bit variant.
Vista is a bit of a non-event for some of the software, in my experience; especially Carrier software (ie; Reefer Manager or Tru Tech). Any Vista laptops we've had, we've ended up converting back to XP where we can.

I apologise if I have mislead you in any way, that is never my intention.
