Has anybody got any experience of working in Afghanistan as a civilian contractor?
Have just spoken to a recruitment agency regarding doing a year out there for the US military but i have a few questions that need answering before i commit to anything.
Any views or experiences would be most welcome.

I have an army friend who keeps telling me how good the money is for contractors working out there. He said If you can get a job soley based in camp Bastian its safe as houses, you dont get mortered or anything there and the camp is so huge its like its own city in the desert. Out side of camp, well thats a different story...

.

Not personaly but I did some training with a guy who
did a few years in Iraq and a few year in Afganistan
so he had all the stories to tell.

He basicly only ever worked on the bases and was
always secure and protected while traveling.

He claimed that by the end of his contract he was
in sole charge of about half a dozen locals and maintained
aircond and refrig for the whole base.

The tents all have airconditioning.

All the best

I was in iraq in 2005 and 2006 not as a fridgie but deployed with a helicopter squadron,

I met some ac guys out there and i think they were on 50k tax free..

But bear in mind when you are getting rocketed 15 times a day it gets to you eventually, I came back a nervous reck and we get alsorts of help to "rehabilitate" when home,

Most afganistan mainbases are a lot safer than where i was but DO check where you are going and that they wont ship you out into the wilderness.

unles you are a war junkie, then happy days

oh the tents use socks for A/C and i reckon are able to provide 10% of the actual cooling load in 52dec C heat in the blazing sun.
