hi all.Found compressor out on oil fail numerous times. suspect weak star point overload on windings causing problem.Problem is cant seem to locate replacement unit or gasket through normal channels,i would remove it but being to chicken to reuse gasket after removal,so if anyone knows of parts for low temp dwm copeland 5hp in oz it would be greatly appreciated apologies for no model no. the suppliers have it.This not the only time as other faults have occured with different makers so is handy to keep in the brain box.cheers

Hi lowcool.
If you mean that the oil fails an acid test.
Then I can understand your explanation?
Follow the attached link and you should be able to quote the manufacturers part numbers.
Always a good starting point.

Thanks for your interest grizzly. The terminal lid shows what looks like a thermal overload on the windings. If this happens to open circuit, the oil safety will time out & trip.Did check exploded views previously but no overload is depicted.Cheers matey

hi lowcool
hav you change the oil in the unit ?
oil switch shud be last on the safty circuit .
hav you had your gauges on the oil pump to see if your getting good oil pressure ?

You have two seperate issues that are not linked.

The thermal overload (klixon) is open circuit for a reason. It is either faulty or the compressor has a fault causing it to open circuit.

That then moves onto to the oil switch.

If the compressor contactor pulls in but the compressor does not run the oil switch will time out and then trip. The oil switch only knows that when the contactor goes in the compressor is running, so there should be oil pressure. When there is no oil pressure the the oil switch cuts power to the compressor contactor to protect it.

So you need to sort out the klixon issue, it may be faulty or you may have a fault in the wiring to it or the comp may be faulty.
When you sort out to comp the oil switch will then not be an issue.

From experience copelands normaly have oil switches on 7.5hps and up.

You need to check the oil pressure differential between the suction and the oil pump, should be at least 15psi or higher.

The oil strainer is located at the bottom right hand side and may be blocked, but can only be checked when the oil has been emptied from the sump.

Other causes could be flood back on start up or faulty oil pressure switch.

thanks for replies.finally found out,no klixon on windings.superheats on coils fine, oil 47 psi above suction, cannot fault contactor/overload,head pressure slightly down.oil slightly discoloured, yellow tinge.is due for an oil change.set overload to manual reset.will let it run until fault recurs.if anything over voltage is present,246 volts per leg 428 across phases.i will track the bug down sooner or later.cant really say that strainer is blocked due to oil pressure taken unless plastic bag is in sump

At last someone that bothers to update us all after an initial post.
Well done and good luck.
Most don't even bother to say thank you!|
