Drilling

Hey all,

I have a job coming up which requires alot of holes to be bored through steel to allow pipework through, any sugestions on which type of drill bit would be best,
It would be helpful if 'shills33' could sound his advice as i hear hes an expert at boring through a shop roof!

Depends how serious is that job. If it is for larger pipe diameters (ø>32mm) than
diamond drill bits on water cooled drill for diamond bits (http://www.rems.de/go.aspx?lid=2&tid=15&pgid=497488e0-fbe5-41bf-af95-0b5ed18f80f8). If pipe diameter is smaller, these Bosch drill bits (http://www.bosch-pt.co.uk/accboptocs2-uk/Category.jsp;jsessionid=8F20BB6668048E340007B2ECB045A668?ccat_id=97192&lang=en) are best, by my expirience.
Probably best is to subcontract that job to specialized company.
Anyhow, you are not (or better to say, you should not be) allowed to drill thru structural elements if you are damaging their structural strength.

I agree with Nike holes should not really be drilled through structural steel, but if they have better to get a specialist contractor.
I would personally be looking for an alternative pipe route.

If you need to drill the steel best to get professional advice. If you get the go ahead any decent drill bit should do but as you`ve got quite a few to drill I`d hire a "sticky drill" ie a very small pillar drill that has a magnetic base. They make jobs like this a breeze.
