View Full Version : generic single phase contactor?

A lot of units have "contactor" style relays with 240v coils in the outdoor to run the compressor, these are like a standard 3 phase relay in height but usually only have two contacts/terminals side by side instead of 3 or 4 of a standard 3 phase contactor so they're narrower.

Anyone know where to get them?
From memory old samsungs used them, but parts from them take ages anyway. And going the standard 3 phase route isn't viable for two reasons, size (might be too big to fit) and price (you'd need a 25-32A as it's single phase)

I've got a lot of rubbish cheapy splits with no spare parts available that I look at that still use these relays, as they have no outdoor PCB. Anyone with part numbers and model number from the mainstream brands that I could order in from them? Or anyone in australia have a parts supplier for TCL, celcius and those type of chinese import units?

these are what I mean, but out of stock here

I've used single pole contactors from RS Components, about one inch wide..

I don't know what is available to you but Siemens are worldwide!
These, you linked, are not for the job.

Thaks for the reply, I looked through RS au and refrig wholesalers first. Unfortunately there's no high current 240v coil single or two pole contactors in the australian RS spares catalog or website. SOunds good though, maybe I could find it with a model or catalogue number?

edit:

nike, I couldn't find anything in your links that would do the job for the size/price.
What do you mean what I linked to would not be for the job? Thats exactly what these manufacturers put in their a/cs, 25A two pole contactors.
Don't forget they use basic types of soft starter here in au, so most of the relays/contactors are only rated to 20 or 25A as there's less start up current.

Quite often they only use these types of relays:
http://au.farnell.com/omron-electronic-components/g7l-2a-t-200-240ac/relay-dpno-25a-240vac/dp/9949690

And often use the two contacts in parrallel to spread the current if neccesary. That was the samsung 2.5hp compressor way before they went to inverters. Though I'd prefer a 2 pole contactor rather than the small omron relay.

On second page of my first link you have this:
Open Type & Standard Width Enclosure, Single Phase, 2-Pole

That is exactly why you frequently change them. They are not for the job.
If they are for the job, no one would install motor contactors which costs 5 times more than these relays. They are simple relays, not contactors, and they are not designed for motor starting purpose. You will newer find them in Daikin or Mitsubishi or Fujitsu. Only in cheapo Chinese products, because if they fit these, their product will be costing twice as much.

Like I said, samsung used those small omron relays (in my second link) in their 7kw cooling capacity splits (~13 FLA), they just ran the relay in parrallel and used a soft start like all over 2hp compressor need here by regulation. But the samsung relay is not what I want now, I'm looking for a two pole contactor like my first link (telemechanique).

I don't frequently change these relays, sorry for the confusion, I've only changed a couple in the past. What I meant by "I've got a lot of these relays in cheapy units", is that I've noticed them in a lot while servicing or fixing something else on the unit, not that I need a lot of these relays for currently broken a/cs.

I'm just looking for a generic part to replace them to have in stock in case I need them later on. But I do have 1 broken unit now that needs a relay now though. I've only had to replace them 3-5 times in the past five years, mainly samsung, but one celcius unit. And now here's another brand that uses them, TCL.

edit:
I've changed these relays and two pole contactors way less than I've replaced the 3 phase contactors in the aot45s and 60s! Talk about cheap and prone to fail, look no further than the contactors in the main brands :D

I'm not dismissing your valid points, but just saying the relays aren't prone to failure with the soft starters we have, even mainstream brands use only 20A-25A relays here like fujitsu, mitsubishi and samsung.

Yep, I got your point and cant help because I dont know what is availiable to you.

Did you try to find Merlin-Gerin (Schneider) CT 2000

Hi Paul

This is a link to the UK RS site

http://uk.rs-online.com/web/search/searchBrowseAction.html?method=getProduct&R=2439747

If you click on the "Data Sheet", lower left hand side they show 16 and 25 amp single modules.

Hope this helps.

Brian,
the trouble with these is that they only have a 16A AC1 rating. For motors, one needs to use an AC3 rated unit.

Paul,
I would have thought that the OMRON GL7 range would have been ideal, do you need to switch both Phase and Neutral? as the Single Pole is rated at 30A (25A Motor) load.

I use these without problems.

Yeah, I think I'll go the omron relay, as I said, it has a soft start anyway, I've seen them used in samsungs without any problems, they're small and can fit anywhere and I can easily get those relays without chasing up every local electrical wholesaler.
None of the electric wholesalers have decent websites here, so trying to find out what they have means a lot of wasted time phoning around
