Could someone please explain to me the advantages and disadvantages of having an across the line starter for a chiller? Are there limitations depending on chiller tonnage?
Thanks much

Is it what we used to call a direct on line starter? If so the problem is the massive in rush current, if it's a big motor thats starting. You need a heavy duty supply.

Peter,
The phrase 'across the line starter' is used to also indicate a 'full voltage starter' where all three phase are connected at the same time.

A direct on line starter should be used up to 4kw after that it depends on the electric motor wether it uses part wind or star delta starting. The reason is the high current draw on a DOL starter.
