Questions about R-170 (Ethane)

Hi, all.
Our company got order of R290/R170 cascade refrigeration package. However, it's the first time to use R170 as a refrigerant, so your helps are needed.

1) Is there minimum degree of purity to use R170 as a refrigerant?
2) We have experience of using CO2 as low side refrigerant of cascade system. Any noticeable difference for design or operating between CO2 and R170?
3) It's hard to find R-170 supplier. Would you recommend R-170 world wide supplier? The product to be exported to South Korea.

Okay, first off, ethane vs co2 is a wonderful new experience for you. Oil becomes much easier in the system, pressures will be a tid bit higher, and ultimately you'll have much better load and temperature handling. Also you can use a economizer without fears of dry ice, which will earn you 10-15% with ethane.

1) I'd recommend 99.5% or better, and charging through a large 3-5 ton filter if you have one handy.
2) See above.

Hi from cold Norway.

You could ask the Ilshin company in Korea.
They are a big maker of ultralow temperature freezers and they use mostly R 170 in the low side og their systems. I suppose they import a lot of the stuff. Not a big deal, but if you get the it as a refrigerant labeled as R 170 is should be pure and dry just to use. No need for any filtration then. I am into the R1150 an even more flamable type (Ethen formerly ethylene) and that one was supplied cheap by a gas suplier normally used as a ripening gas. Not speced as an R gas, but still very dry and clean so may be some other branches use a good ethen you can use.
