Recharge airconditioner with R22?

I have a sailboat with 2 1973 Cruisair air conditioners on it. The compressors come on and seem to work fine and the fan blows too. The air isin't cold though. The manual said it's an R-22 system. I was wondering if it was possible for me (no experience with air conditioners) to recharge the system, and if so, should I use R-22 or something newer.

Do not do anything you are not qualified for!!

And yes, R-22. Get someone qualified to do the job.

You will not even be able to purchase R-22. You will have to get a licensed service tech to help you.
