View Full Version : Risk in high compressor oil level?

I'm running a 752 ton York OTS4G centrifugal chiller with R-12. We got the high oil level light/alarm in last night after the unit had been in service ~20 hours. It had been run previously for a post-maintenance test following maintenance (that required oil drain and refrigerant transfer) with no high oil level light/ alarm coming in, and it ran for at least 3 hours that run. Two questions:

what is the danger in running a compressor with too much oil, or at least enough oil that the high level light/ alarm comes in? Does it pose some (immediate) threat to the operation of the machine?
why would it come in so long after startup? wouldn't it come in initially?
Also, after some of the oil was drained out to make the high oil level light/ alarm go away, the oil level didn't drop until a Temperature Control adjustment was made (from 41F up to 44F). Is there some correllation between oil level and temperature control adjustments?

Any and all help is greatly appreciated!
