I may be working on a similar project and am interested in comments on this subject also. In the meantime I have found some information that is related to the subject and thought it should be shared...

ES-22a (a drop-in replacement for R22) works great in an average central A/C unit. I'm not sure how well it would work in a chiller, but it is a mixture that must be liquid charged. No oil change needed either.
