    l'unite hermetique R12 Condensing unit

    Hi,

I have a client who a really old 5 door fridge. The compressor is dead. However, the last guy who replaced the compressor made a right mess of things and managed to burn the label off the compressor. The last few digits are remaining and are "440A, hermetique and R12" I've looked through the l'unite hermetique catalouge and as far as I can see the only compressor that ends in these digits on R12 is "CAE4440A."

I've managed to find a local wholesaler who can get me the compressor but I would prefer to change the whole condensing unit due to the last guys handy work.

I think the unit I need is "CAE4440AHR." I am strugling to locate anybody is the Canaries or Spain that sells these. Does anybody know anywhere where it maybe be possible?

    Thanks guys,

    Paul

Re: l'unite hermetique R12 Condensing unit

Apparently I wont be able to get a condensing unit on R12. The unit is not classed as a spare, so it is banned.

What a stupid rule. I can buy all the parts (on R12) seperate and a make a condensing unit, but I can't buy the unit complete.

I'm looking at retrofitting it to R134a now instead.

Re: l'unite hermetique R12 Condensing unit

See you're living in Lanzarote which is part of the EU I suppose, so it's mandatory to change it to R134a and not because R12 parts aren't available any longer.

A R134a has just the same mass flow, it's in fact even the same compressor, they just poored ester oil in it.
So what's the problem with using an R134a, eventually charged with an R12 drop-in if you're afraid of converting it.
But be prepared for clogging when you change it to R134a. Install anyhow a new filter-dryer even better a 052 like used in normal refrigeration (not a service dryer)
It's better to keep your mouth shut and give the impression that you're stupid than to open it and remove all doubt.

    Hi Paul:
I suspect what you might have is a Tecumseh AE4440A
Hermetic Compressor. A modern replacement would be: AEA4440YXC, assuming you have 50 Hz. power there. If it is this compressor, the mod.# indicates 1/4 Horse Power, 220-50-1, 400 BTU/hr @ 45F Evap. Temp., High Torque start. R-12. Does this sound like yours?

    DO NOT USE R134a
    use a R12 droping

I would rather use R134a because it's is easier to get spares and gas. R12 drop-ins are really hard to get over here to start with, and a condenser would be even harder.

In the mod# AE4440YXC the Y indicates that this new compressor uses R134a. In the old mod# the A indicated R12. Sorry if I wasn't clear.

    cheers rick,

    I knew what you meant.

The condensing unit I have ordered is a CAE4440Y/7205. There are two options available. My spanish wasn't good enough to understand the difference. In the column labeled "tipo de montaje" (type of a asembly? I think) in the catalouge there are two options "obus" or "calderin." I have no idea what these two words mean. And the spanish girl in the wholsalers didn't know either. She rang somebody who explained it to her, but I didn't understand what she was going on about. Anyone got any ideas what they might mean?

Obus means 'shell' and as for calderin the nearest I can find is about 'storing compressed air into a metal container'??

So maybe it just means the compressor is in a metal shell - well we all knew that already didn't we?

obús means SCHRADER VALVE which is normally welded at the service tube of the hermetic compressor.

calderín means RECEIVER or LIQUID RECEIVER

You can try also with embraco, danfoss or ACC condensing units which are also reliable and are cheaper
