Honda 450 Then honda 500/4 gave it up about 20 years ago. To many kids, (5) , etc.. but it was a great time. Each summer took one of my sons on a 2 week cruise. Saw some pretty country.

Re: Bikes
Tried to post this yesterday but didn't work...
You have a couple of different routes as you are (probably) over 21 - 125 test or direct access (DAS). If you are under 21 you can't do DAS.
Before you're allowed on the road on anything you have to do your compulsory basic training (CBT). After that you can ride a moped or 125cc bike with L plates, limited to 15bhp (top speed about 80mph), no pillions or motorways. If you pass the test on the 125 then you can ride anything up to 33bhp with no L-plates or other restrictions for 2 years, after which the 33bhp limit goes too. You can buy bikes which are much more powerful e.g. 500/600cc with restrictor kits, so after 2 years you pull out the kit and thave the same bike but 70/80/90etc. BHP. If all you do is commute round town or aren't bothered about lots of motorway miles, a small biek may be all you need anyway, and you can squeeze 90mpg out of a 125.
Direct access gets you to your unlimited licence in one step. Downside is you have to pass your test on a bike of over 54bhp (usually 400cc upwards), but unlike the 125 you can't just go and ride it - you can only ride it with L plates and an instrctor following you. The test is tougher too (rightly so). Downside in practical terms is you get your licence with less time on the bike, so the test is harder to pass and it does open the door for numpties. Mind you, plenty of them in cars...
Step one is CBT no matter what you want, so might as well get on with it! You can find out more once you're there. Cost should be around £60-70 plus bike hire about £30 unless you want to buy a 125/moped straight away and use it (a bike shop will deliver it to the training centre for you). It's a lovely day to pump some gas

Re: Bikes
I must admit one thing that I would like to see as a general rule..
That is that EVERY car driver should have spent some time on two wheels, motorised, during the early spring or autumn. That way they would be more aware of the road conditions when sat inside their metal boxes on wheels.Brian - Newton Abbot, Devon, UK

Re: Bikes
Ok so here's my collection and I haven't been without a bike since I was 12 yrs old, so a little biased.
99 Triumph Tiger 900 (in the best colour Yellow) 885cc efi - 67,000 miles and counting
1981 Suzuki GN400 Red Canadian Import - four stroke single 85 mpg anyone?? For sale anyone need a cheap winter hack? PM me.
1980 Suzuki GN400 Black Canadian Import - customised to loook like an Arial HT trials
1999 Jinlun 125cc - for the learners in the family.
On it's way a late 1940s Douglas 350cc - Blue
Mini 1000cc needs a clutch
Ford Ranger 2003 needs front wheel bearings !
Highly recommended is the advanced motorcycle training - be honest we all got bad habits and don't pay attention. This will improve your riding (and reduce your insurance premiums) - I just got quoted £220 fully comp for a multi bike policy for all four together, fantastic.
Did anyone out there get hassle from your company for riding a bike on business? Mine just banned biking on the grounds of 'health and safety' - even though it's probably saved them a fortune on fuel\parking \conjestion charges.....don't get me started GGRRRRR!!!
Two wheels best, fours wheels if I must and you insist and if HSE say so, but not my choice.
Cheers
Loops

Re: Bikes
Good day to you all. I have three bikes, 83 XL500 RC which I am rebuilding after blowing it up trying to do the Scorpion a couple of years ago, getting bits is a pain, a 82 CBX550F which I started commuting on until the top end spat most of the oil over my legs and havn't sorted yet and a 98 NT650V Deauville which I use, when I'm at home, to get around on. I'm looking to get a WR250F when I finish in this place to get back into Enduro racing and a bit of greenlaning, if there are any left after the NERC thing thats happened whilst I have been away. Keep the faith and upright.

Re: Bikes
My choices were: Buy a Honda and retire or buy a Harley and keep working to pay for it.
I took the Shadow for a test ride and the decision was a slam dunk. You just can't beat Honda for quality and dependability... even at twice the price.

Re: Bikes
I have a friend who claims to have originated the Harley "Fat Boy".
As the story goes, he was sitting in a bar in Sturgis having a few drinks when someone told him that Willy G. Davidson was out in the parking lot and wanted to meet him. He said "yeah... sure" and continued drinking.
About an hour later he wandered out to the parking lot to find Willy G. admiring the modifications he had made to his bike.
Shortly thereafter, out came the Harley Fat Boy, which looked a lot like his bike.
I don't know how true it is, but it's a good story and he tells it well.Last edited by Gary; 21-02-2007 at 12:23 PM.

In my neighbours garden, I see an old BMW R600 (probably around 1975). It seems to be in excellent condition. Good body. A while ago, I heard his son puttering around the garden and it sounds good.
Can you still get parts for these bikes?

For all you petrol heads i would like to introduce you to road legal quads. mines a yamaha yfz 450 0-60 in 4.5 secs and you can ride it on a car licence and at only 300 quid fully comp insurance, cheapest and most fun of getting a speed thrill on four wheels dont you think. I pray for snow.

I'm thinking about parting with the old BMW K100RS (1984) and buying a brand new old pattern (India) Royal Enfield 500cc Bullet.
They used to be one of 'the bikes' to be around when I was somewhat younger and it's the nearest I can get to my old 500cc Norton single of days gone by.Brian - Newton Abbot, Devon, UK
