Covid-19 - have you been affected?
I know everyone is probably sick of hearing about the Covid-19 pandemic thats sweeping the world at the moment, but i just wondered if this has impacted on anyone's work? now with the social lockdown in place i imagine it will put quite a few people lacking work due to looking after pubs/cafe's ect.
The line of work that im in we deal with fresh fruit and vegetable storage and packing areas and we are still busy which is good for us but also puts an element of worry in us as engineers being that could we be putting our children/family at a greater risk by working in the areas we work?
I know some companies have gone on to emergency standby only, i have a friend who works in supermarket refrigeration and he said he is busier than ever, but then i have another friend who works in the retail sector of fridge and aircon and he has been made redundant because of whats happening.
Me being asthmatic puts me on the vulnerable list and i'll be 100% honest while i am worried about contracting it i am more worried about bringing the virus home and my family getting it.
Keep safe people and look after yourself's and loved ones.

Re: Covid-19 - have you been affected?
I appreciate your concerns but with the lack of testing being performed here in the UK it is hard to get a fair picture of how things are going. There are more getting better than there are getting worse.
Far more people have been killed on the roads and many, many more die of flu annually so with all things like this we need to be careful but use common sense.
I think the general shutdown instigated by the Government may have, at last, woken the youngsters to their responsibilities instead of congregating in pubs and clubs.
Some organisations have sh1t for brains such as the Cornish tourism board suggesting that people come down here to get away from it all as Devon and Cornwall have very few cases. Personally I'm all for shutting the M5 and the A30 at the county border but that might be considered too much by some. But seriously, inviting the contaminated to a safe( ish ) area has got to be dumb.
Be personally safe and really apply your own health and safety rules.Brian - Newton Abbot, Devon, UK

The most important factor for all of you active in the trade is to keep calm, stay safe and look after your loved ones, without invading the lovely west country.

Re: Covid-19 - have you been affected?
You cannot have common sense if you are not informed.
Please inform yourself dear colleagues:
https://medium.com/@tomaspueyo/coron...e-f4d3d9cd99ca
And act accordingly!!!
When you’re done reading the article, this is what you’ll take away:
The coronavirus is coming to you.
It’s coming at an exponential speed: gradually, and then suddenly.
It’s a matter of days. Maybe a week or two.
When it does, your healthcare system will be overwhelmed.
Your fellow citizens will be treated in the hallways.
Exhausted healthcare workers will break down. Some will die.
They will have to decide which patient gets the oxygen and which one dies.
The only way to prevent this is social distancing today. Not tomorrow. Today.
That means keeping as many people home as possible, starting now.Last edited by nike123; 22-03-2020 at 12:49 PM.

Re: Covid-19 - have you been affected?
It's going to be tough, it's going to be a very different landscape in 7 days time, i believe all outlets other than shops/pharmacies will be closed, construction sites should be closed but economic reality may keep them open. Wash your hands especially when you first arrive home.
i see service work especially in health related areas picking up massively, NHS/HSE are going to be snowed under and this will place massive strain on cold chain.Mostly found in the southern part of this green and pleasant land.

Re: Covid-19 - have you been affected?
After last night's talk from PM i thought it would of cleared things up abit better, instead it's left more people confused than anything.
So the advice is stay home unless absolutely necessary to go out to get supplies or exercise, work from home as and where possible (not at all in this industry) and to only go out to work where essential work is required.
Being that my company looks after farms for fruit and veg our work is considered "essential" but our argument (the engineers on the road) is that its not actually essential at the moment as most of our sites have no stock in them at the moment, but still the company wants us to carry out maintenance, most other companies i know have stopped maintenance and are currently working on a breakdown service only and even then its as a last resort.
Seems everybody wants to be a keyworker at the moment and continue working where me on the other hand fear for mine and my families health and would much rather be home but sadly im not in a financial situation where i can live easily and comfortably, so it looks like its time to knuckle down and keep as safe as possible.
Keep safe everyone hopefully things start to calm down soon

Re: Covid-19 - have you been affected?
It's a difficult one for all of us not least employers. To gain access to the government support grant of up to 80% of workers pay, they must change the employment status of the employees to 'furloughed workers'
If your status has been changed then you are not allowed to work. I don't see how you can then be sent out on an emergency call out?

Here in Croatia is not good, but due to small population
numbers are not that big like in Italy and Spain ....

on Sunday morning 22.03.2020. at 06:24 hours we had a big earthquake of 5,5 R
in my home town Zagreb ... but
due to corona virus restrictions of social contacts, blocked public traffic there were not too many
people outside, but unfortunately one fatal case one 15 years old girl in her house ....
and today another one fatal ... member of rescue team accidentally fall from one building ...

Re: Covid-19 - have you been affected?
I was affected by this pandemic more in mental way. I had to work from home, I had to manage my time in another way, I had to live absolutely another life and I had to cope with big amount of endless stress. Anyway, this virus showed to me that a human may adapt to everything.

Re: Covid-19 - have you been affected?
.
I'm positive I have had it.
My wife, youngest daughter and I all had it in March/April and it messed me up bad. My wife was very poorly but my daughter had minor issues. It put me in bed and doctors were consulted, I remember it all but I did not have any say in what was decided because I was too poorly. I did not go to hospital because it did not affect my chest, I was lucky I think because I am overweight and asthmatic.
The Short of it was I was very, very poorly for two weeks but because it left my chest alone I was very lucky that I was not bad enough to go to hospital
