Re: spyware software
I know what I recommend is not really practical, but with prices of desktops so low I keep two computers.
One I use for internet access and if it becomes infected or runs strangely I will restore my Windows if other protection problems fail to remedy.
Try Spybot, its quite good and will also immunize. Its free and is superb. Do a Google to locate it.
Trend Micro do a good on line scan of your system.
My lap top never gets connected to the internet unless I have to. Its got wireless so whenever Im on the road it tends to pick up other peoples connections and I get to surf for free.
Ive been using a flash card to maintain my back ups between my desk tops and laptops.

Re: spyware software
Hi Guys,
Tried various sites including microsoft.com but i couldn't get spybot to load with no luck. Now i don't know if the spyware was preventing loading but i finally got it to load off the download.com website and cleared it all. I still get an e.search page come up when i go into internet explorer but i can live with that. My Computer was running at almost standstill but i have just defrag'd it and what a mess. Now everthing is clear both virus and spywear and i am back up to full speed

Re: spyware software
Hi Guys,
Have found the file that is bringing up the search engine, its been stuck in C:/windows/system/spyuf.dll
I cannot delete it, whatever way i go in all i get is "The specified file is being used by windows" and won't let me delete it.
Anyone know how i can bypass it and delete it.
I assume i have to shut down windows and delete it under DOS but cannot see how to shut windows off.
I can get into dos though windows but this still keeps windows active. any ideas anyone
Regards

Re: spyware software
If you download HijackThis from http://www.atribune.org/downloads/HijackThis.exe and post the log it produces I'll take a look and give you a hand removing any problem files I see.
Edit: Thats a random named file try booting to safe mode and deleting it there. To get to safe mode reboot your computer and keep taping F8 till a menu comes up. From the menu choose safe mode. Once in safe mode locate and delete c:\windows\system\spyuf.dll. Reboot to get back to normal windows and see if the problem persists.
Let me know,

Re: spyware software
As Dave says, boot in " safe mode"
Locate file, delete it.
This is a hijacker file, its written into your registry and cleverly programmed so u cannot delete it in normal mode.
Did u download the spybot software? Remember to run it in safe mode as well.Any opinions, statements and facts expressed in this message do not constitute legal advice in any shape or form and is given for a general outlook in nature. Re: spyware software
Hi Aiyub,
Run Spybot in Normal mode and cleared off loads of junk.
Also could not believe my eyes when i defrag'd so much all over the place and it was probably only a week before everything hit that i last done it. All back up to speed now thanks but i will shut down as soon as i have typed this and run spybot and try and delete that file in safe mode
If you don't see me online after this you know someting has gone drasticly wrong

Re: spyware software
Hi Raymond
The best way to boot into dos is the use the win98 start up disk.
Lots of free anti spyware downloads from this site http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/

Re: spyware software
Hi Guys,
Just got in, called out at 21:00 but did have chance to try deleting file in safe mode. Didn't work as it came up with in use again. I am assuming i have got to shut windows down completly and run dos, i have tried it before running dos through windows but this doesn't work.
Frank, i don't know where my windows start up disc is as i havn't installed windows ME it just come preloaded. Could it perhaps be the 3.25 floppy labeled "Rescue disc".
OH WELL the joys of modern technology. Will try again tommorow. Does anyone know how to shut windows down and go to dos, i remember on 3.1 there use to be a field on the shutdown/restart menu to restart in dos but all i have now is shutdown/restart/hibernate and standby

Re: spyware software
Raymond
Follow the instructions here http://www.microsoft.com/windows98/u...r/Bootdisk.asp
When you have the disk put it in the floppy drive and restart your machine

Re: spyware software
Your best bet is do a format and relaod Windows from scratch.
I would switch to Win XP , if your machine can handle it.
XP has superior anti spam / pop up blockers controls built in.....
Also use Mozilla Firefox as your browser
