    Hi teknicool you can use a analogue meter on a cap to check deflection only take your volt meter put it on volts take your leads put them on the cap terminals
    your meter will move form one end the the other switch your leads and redo the test this test will not tell you if you cap is where it needs to be analogue meter are a good ballpark meter, I stop using mine 10 yrs ago.

    Just got asked the question, and do not like not knowing the right answer, so better ask I always say.

    The old off towards infinity with the needle thing is what I remember.

    Thanks for the info.

    Hello everyone , new to site!!! I don't use analouge anymore either. Changed to fieldpiece hvac/r meter. This meter is designed for the hvac trade. You can test compacitors, line voltage,even do subcooling and superheat. Sorry to go on about it, love it, won't work without it!!! Yes if needle stays to infinity bad .

    Another way to check with capacitor in the circuit and motor running:

    capacitor = (amps * 2654) / volts
