I came across this by accident, whilst looking for something completely different, I've tried it and it appears to work. This is copied direct from where I found it.

Any one who doesn't know about this yet and wants to speed up firefox check this out.

type about:config into a firefox browser address bar. Hit enter and scroll down to where it says

network.http.pipelining and right click and reset the value to true.

then go to network.http.proxy.pipelining and set that to true and then go to network.http.pipelining.maxrequests and set that to 30.

And finally, right click anywhere and select New>Integer and name it nglayout.initialpaint.delay and set it's value to 0.

Now this is for a broadband or dsl connection. I'm not sure if it'll work for dialup.

Normally the browser will make one request to a web page at a time. When you enable pipelining it will make several at once, which really speeds up page loading.

Hope this helps somebody.
