hello been asked today to supply & fit air con unit for offshore electrical cabnet for controling a crain measures about 1m x 1m x 0.5m it has to stand up to rough seas work off 24v 110v or 240v & work in extream heat around the equaitor would be fine if it could run on r134 gas but any advise on type & size of unit required much apricated

In the case of Air Conditioning of an electrical box, you have to be careful about the RH. It should not be high. It should be in the range of 40 to 50%. As you say the ambient conditions are extreme and severe, this means that the ambinet must be very high. Upto an ambient temperature of 60 Deg C you should use R 134a and if it is higher then you have to use R 124 or R 236fa. The refrigeration compressors should be either open reciprocating type or semi hermetic type. Generally there are two compressors which are suitable for such applications. They are Bitzer and Bock.

We had about 40 of their units at Gillette's factory (whilst there still were one in UK), they worked OK without any major problems.

Don't know what they can offer for corrosive environments but it is worth asking them.

In this particular application, I presume water could be used to cool the condenser. The shell & tube condenser has to be suitable for marine application. Could you state the extreme ambient temperature.

Since the ambient is 50 Deg. C and you could use sea water, then I would advice you to use water cooled condensers with R 22 or else with air cooled condenser you use R 134a which will be suitable for this application. The compressors which will be more suitable are either Bitzer or Bock.

The coils should be finished with a coat of epoxy paint. These are available, further the coil manufacturers will provide this. The fin spacing for the Air Cooled Condenser should be 8 fins per inch and for that of the Evaporator Coils it should be 10 fins per inch.

These are what I use for the Steel Plant and Coal Pit application Cranes Operators cabin and Operators Cabin in the Power Shovels respectively.
