Water Cooler Design
Hi All
I am in the process of designing a water cooler to supply drinking water in a labour camp of 1000 people. Condensing unit will be at an ambient of 35 to 50 degree C. Inner tank in 1.5 mm thick and outer tank in 0.8 mm thick stainless steel sheet respectively. Insulation is Injected polyurathene 700 mm thick. Evaporator coil should be wound around outer side of inner tank. The tank will be placed above ceiling in the dinig hall and has float valve controlled 2" diameter inlet pipe. Outlet is insulated 2" dia. pipe running 2 meter down and then connected to 4 no. water taps. Inlet water temperature may be as high as 60 Deg. C during summer here in the middle east.
My Questions are:-
1. How to calculate the hourly consumption/ person?
2. What should be the tank size?
3. Once hourly consumtion is got, is it enough to calculate the sensible heat to select the condensing unit.
4. How to size the evaporator coil (copper tube size and total length)

Well with the 4 taps are they filling the glasses they drink out of or large containers to take with them for the day when they work?
If it is drinking water to go with their meals, do they feed 1000 people at once or do they eat in shifts?
Why is the water warmer than the ambient, is it straight out of an RO plant?

In such ambient, people can drink up to 6 liters a day.
6x1000 persons = 6000 liters / day
6000 liters / day = 250 l/h=0.069 l/s
0.069 x 50°K (60°C - 10°C drinking water) = 3.45 Kcal/s
3.45 x 3600 = 12420 Kcal/h
12420/860=14.5kW of cooling capacity
I would suggest to keep at least 2 hours of consumption in the tank, and that would be 500 litersLast edited by NoNickName; 13-03-2007 at 01:05 PM.

No Nickname solved most of my doubts. But still want to know the cooiling coil designing procedure. As suggested by Taz24, can keep the coil inside tank, but not to damage the coils during tank cleaning, I think propose to fit out side.
