    Question about chillers.

Does anyone know the name of the procedure that is done on water pipes in a chiller to see if irs clean or something like that. I think you stick something in the pipe or something along those lines. If anyone thinks they know what I am talkin about please let me know, thanks alot guys.

    .

There are various electro-magnetic tests available that will provide an indication of metal stress in tubes. Not certain if they will show any degree of fouling. I think they were known generically as Eddy-Current testing some while back but different techniques may go under other names.

Suggest you contact a company that specialise in non-destructive testing of tubes and vessels, who should be able to advise you.

Do you mean if the water cooled evap or cond gets clogged with water scale build up. Most evaps and conds can be opened up and rodded to clean.

    Cheers taz.

before you do anything else ,check the pd and flow rate, then td @ full load, you should have approx 6 degrees c across your bundle if lower your tubews will most probably be fouled, Hope this helps

    (1) What water pipes?

    - Do you mean the pipes (tube/pipe bundle) you see when you open the end cover/s of a shell & tube evaporator?
    - Or, you may mean the chilled water piping?

    (2) What kind of procedure?

    - Do you mean the measurement of the fouling? scale thickness?
    - Or do you mean the procedure of cleaning the evaporator pipes, e.g. descaling?

I hope to have ask the right question. . .

Or i may have misunderstood the question. . .

    Smile Re: Question about chillers.

    Hi,

If my own experience with Eddy Current Tube analysis, it is always necessary to have the condenser or evaporator tubes cleaned prior to testing. The Transducer which is inserted along the length of each tube is a close fit and could not be used when the tubes are fouled.

    Regards.

    Re: Question about chillers.

Eddy Current testing is the normal procedure for inspecting copper or cupronickle tubes in chillers. This is done after the tubes have been cleaned.

Steel tubes are done using a Magnetic Flux Leakage test which is different from eddy current testing. This is also done after the tubes have been cleaned.

If your looking to test piping outside the chiller I believe you can use Ultrasonic Testing to determine wall thicknesses, cracks, etc.

Best way to telll if your tubes are fouled is by approach and delta T.
