    Compressor comparison

    Hi, all!
I am wondering what are advantages/disadvantages of various compressor types (eg reciprocal, rotary vane, scroll). I noticed that, in refrigeration, reciprocal compressors are widely used, and in AC scroll or rotary rules. Why, if rotary/scroll are so efficient, these aren't so popular in refrigeration?
I am talking about small systems, below 10hp.

    Re: Compressor comparison

My guess the recips can take more abuse (handle liquid hits) better then the other types. Radials in AC were good for this. The vane pumps are good "variable displacement pumps" ... I guess that's why they use them in auto's. Scrolls are quiet and my favorite for AC and, they seem to hold up the best, at least this is what I found over the years.
