Upside down TEV's

Hi Guys,

I seem to remember that a few months ago there was a thread about tev's and whether they would work if located upside down.

Well i have got to go to a site tommorow with an upside down valve.

Can anyone point me in the direction of the thread so i can see what the conclusion was

I would imagin they wotk just fine no matter what way they are facing, I have one running upside down with no problems.

In Theory i know they should work but its one of these jobs that is just a process of elimination.

I seem to remember someone having problems with one located upside down, poss oil collecting in it.

Anyway, going to look at the job this morning to see whats going on

oil conducts pressur just as well as gas, so again, it is odd to think it would be a source of problem, Perhaps moisture could build inside?

You may install it in any direction, just make that the bulb faces downwards

Normally (99,99 % of the cases) this won't be a problem.
But everything that may not get into the expansion valve (dirt, small metalic particles, ... ) will get trapped in the valve. If it's a valve with internal pressure equalisation, chances are these particles get on the diaphragm and cause stress ... (causing cracks ....).
Of course these particles shouldn't go to the expansion valve because you have a filtre drier upstream and most of the TEV have an internal filter, but....

will not pose any problem. i see it in bus a/c systems and no problem at all. gravity has nothing to do with the operation of the vavle.

I wish I had read this post yesterday. I spent a lot of time and effort mounting a valve in the upright position, because I believed you could not mount them upside down.

By the way, after reading this post, I went to my truck, dug through the garbage pail, and found the unread instructions from my valve... and read them. According to Sporlan you can mount their valves in any direction.

Just spoke with Sporlan yesterday on this topic. Any position OK, just make sure it's not at a low point in the system as it might collect oil making the valve very sluggish.

Yep, AHU with three TXVs side by side. They all look a bit crappy. Just condensation causing the problem plus a bit of salt air no doubt.

Hoping to get the OK to change them at the same time as I change the rusted filter/driers.. Just love working near the seaside

the pressure is not the problem in this case, as you said it will transmitt it easily. The bottleneck is the temperature!!!!!!!!!!!! The trapped oil does have the temperature of the refrigerant in the liquid line this does influence the bulb and the working bahavior of a TXV.

Would it be a good idea to paint the TXV after installing it? I think there's a zinc-bearing paint just for preventing corrosion (they use zinc to protect the metal parts of boats).

As an OEM case mfr. We prefer to mount them upside down. This way SH can be easily adjusted if need be. Of couse we"re working very clean . I can't say there have been tev problems in fact they're quite the problem free componenant

Peter_1 brings up an important point in that the bulb should be mounted in the cap tube elevated position. This allows the liquid portion of its charge to be stored in the bulb rather than in the powerhead where it can make the action of the valve sluggish.
