Time to call it a day after 50 years

After 50 years in the air conditioning trade, I have decided to retire on 31st May.
It is a great industry which has seen many changes during the last 50 years, mostly improvements.
I am sure that there will be many more changes and improvements in efficiency, probably at a more rapid pace in the future.
Looking back I can honestly say that mostly I have enjoyed the journey from apprentice through to Service Manager. If not, I would not still be in this trade.
Not wanting to be too nostalgic but who remembers when C17 thermostats were all that was required for any make of A/C or when wall mounted units were something of a new idea.
Window rattlers were the norm in 'high security' computer rooms.
I am sure that I will miss the hustle and bustle of the trade, for a while.
But it will be nice to not to have to be responding to the impatient "must have it now" clients.
I will still be dropping into the Forum from time to time to keep up todate with the changes.
Good luck to all of you in the trade and the friends that I have made on this Forum and along the way.

Good luck on you retirement Hyperion...got to say that I retired last year when we broke up for Christmas, after 52 years as a tax payer.

Seems that some of us can't quite give it up though as I've been 'helping out' ever since. Not so often nowadays but hopefully for not too much longer....the old body keeps telling me to slow down

Ah, the dear old C17 'stat, many a time; mutter, mutter, mutter...

Enjoy the change, I'm four years down that route now and you do wonder where the time goes some days.

It's not all glory though, we don't get weekends or bank holidays off any more. ;-)

Well done for a great survival.

I have also retired on January but I just cant stop.....
Changed my clients mix and working less hours [ grand kids and stuff..] but I think that as long as I can, I will make places colder.

Very good luck on your retirement, you are entering the last 20 [I hope many more] years of that round, keep busy and happy.

    .

    Ps

Don't be a stranger to here.
    You can keep on visiting.
Think of us as the kids now they have grown up and left with their own kids.
You can visit the kids (grandkids) but best of all you get to leave again

Think of all us still trapped here working for a living, you can just stroll in visiting,
get the grandkids all excited with toys and sugary sweets then you can sod off and
leave it to us to sort out

    All the best Rob

Re: Time to call it a day after 50 years

    Some of the silver engineers I have been involved with, when approaching their later years, tend to shy away from the heavy lifting installs (makes sense) and just do breakdowns fault-finding, and some maintenance. They avoid the unpleasant sites and do what they like. Maybe with a lad to help with carrying the tools:}

That wealth of knowledge and experience is very valuable for fault-finding and a shame to lose it. And whist a few well-earned weeks rest might be great at first, unless you have some other activity to keep you busy and on your toes, one tends to die away in front of the tv and sucking up all the bad news.

Up to you, but I would encourage you to keep your hand in, keep busy at some work of some kind, until the body just cannot climb a ladder, or (gulp) something like Parkinson catches hold of you.

At least stay active on here, eh?

however I was at the Bristol launch of the new Mastair wall mount range ... the big moment came and they revealed something which looked like an American had designed it in 1953.. To make matters worse they couldn't get the thing to run... Oh how we laughed and never bought one ..
