Modify 2- door reach in for outside use in a freezing ambient.

    Hi guys,
I've been asked to come up with a modification for a 2-door reach-in refrigerator and for a freezer, also a 2-door. They want to run these in an unheated shed and in winter, below freezing conditions. I recall beverage machines having cold weather kits but can't find the needed info.

These are both self contained bottom mounted condensing units with electric condensate pan.

Originally we were asked only to come up with retrofit for the drain but I suspect they will ask us for further help.

We intend to modify the drain line, changing vinyl tubing to copper w/trap and add drain heaters.

My question is what else will I need to prepare for? Cause, effect & solution.

Thanks for reading. Double thanks for your thoughts. Ken

The obvious is to make sure of adequate ventilation in the shed, guess they will have electronic controllers so maybe fit a good make which has two probes ,the freezer will already have these I guess but the refrigerator may not.

Is there a possibility of the fridge, being exposed to below zero temps for prolonged time, being too cold internally, ie risk freezing stored product? You may need to look at head pressure control for both units depending on how cold shed gets.

Or the simple solution is a thermostatically controlled heater in the shed to keep it above freezing point?

Maybe the operation of the Fridge / Freezer will add enough warmth to the shed - keep above Freezing

    HVAC,
You must be on a good salary, at least a 1 million $ a year, unless you are talking wholesale prices of course.

I've just been thrown another obstacle. Both the Freezer and the refrigerator are cap tube systems. How will being exposed to a 20°f ambient affect cap tube operation?

Cap tube behaves like txv apart from the bulb. You can control the flow by changing the condensing pressure.
Check up on google, there are many article's on the subject.
