    Creating a Sonic Bang.

    Just for Fun.
I can think of 2 occasions where an engineer can create a sonic bang!
1 using a refrigerant and the other using another medium.
    Can anyone guess?
I imagine there are more than 2 actually.
    But lets see.

I remember years ago an apprentice charging a transport vunit ,well he did not pay attention to the sight glass overcharged it in those days no electrical HP but a mechanical safety valve on the receiver I was close by and the crack that made when it opened certainly made me jump but he jumped higher!!

Grizzly's comment makes me think - fan belt. I've heard a few really noisy ones over the years.

    Re: Creating a Sonic Bang.

    You are correct FG.
The whip like crack when a belt fails can indeed be at above the speed of sound.

    In actual Fact.
The simplest way to create a true Sonic Bang, is to purge some Ammonia vapour into Water.

The resultant roar is the ammonia vapour imploading faster than the speed of sound!

One old Site I worked at had a disused water sump the size of a large swimming pool.
Which Historically used to have several Evaporative Condensers mounted over it.
With a large probably 2" or more diameter disused HP pipe into it.
The resultant roar you could produce when "Air Purging" used to reverberate around the Industrial estate.
Like some demented person with a mega Digery Do!

The other which replicates a Sonic boom is when de-icing with a steam stripper hose.
Which is how we clear long lengths of frozen Drainline's.
Because when the superheated Steam at the end of the hose, makes contact with the ice plug.
The Steam collapses at a rate faster than sound.
    Again creating a roar!
