    Hotpoint FF187B fridge/freezer

    Hi,

Hope you can offer me some guidance as really worried about my fridge freezer.

It's getting extremely hot on the outside. The side, the trim where the doors meet and the compresser are very hot. The compresser is too hot to touch and the trim has gone a little brown, looks like it's burnt?

I'm worried it's a fire hazard as I know they tend to get quite warm but the sides and trim are very hot.

Any help to resolve this would be extremely appreciated.

    Thanks DSC_0010.jpg

    .

The extra heat might be because of the higher ambient temp
we are experiencing at the moment but if it is overheating,
the heat is either coming from the compressor working too
hard or a trim heater you can't see.

Check the outside heat exchanger (the condenser) and make
sure it is clean. All the heat is rejected through that and if it
is dirty or blocked then the heat will stay inside the system
    and everything will get hotter.

Other than that it could be an indication that the compressor
is failing or if the system has lost some of it's gas, then it
will run hotter, right up until it fails.

    Rob

    Hi Rob,

    Thank you for your reply.

Can I ask, what does the condenser look like and whats it's location? I've looked at the back of the fridge/freezer and all there is, is the compresser and the drip tray.

    Thank you very much

    .

Is there a black radiator like thing?
On the back a large black flat radiator
That is made up of lots of pipes.

Failing that again at the back low down
And with a fan blowing air over it.

    Regards
    Rob

My advice would be to replace it,having just heard that the tragedy in the London tower block may have been started by a faulty fridge, that's if finances allow.

    Hi Rob,

Yes there's a large black radiator on the back covering most of it, no fan at the bottom though just the compresser.

    Cheers

    Hi,

Yes, think it's probably the best.

    .

Most fridges and freezers like that run a pipe from the
Compressor through the door jamb and then onto the
Condenser, the big black radiator at the back.

The waste heat is then rejected throughout this pipe.
If the compressor is too hot and the door jamb is showing
Signs of overheating, I might be a bit concerned.

    Is the temperature inside OK?

Sometimes when it has a lot of work to do the compressor
Will run hot and is normal, but if it has a problem then it could
Be an indicator to something more serious.

I can't tell and if you are in any doubt, get it checked.

    Regards
    Rob
