Glycol s/steel lines is purging required?
Hi all, we are installing a glycol system, I have 2 opinions, ones says we don't need to purge the s/steel glycol lines and the other is recommending that we do it to provent corrosion
Glycol temp is 0c,
S/steel lines, 304. 1.6mm
The glycol is propylene,
Any advise would be much appreciated!!

I don't know about purging but you will need air vents.

Hi, Micbon
Welcome to RE forums...
Probably you are thinking either to use or not shield gas during welding of your pipes ... argon or helium .... otherwise your job will be done at very low quality ... weld repairing is always more expensive then good welding procedure from beginning ... but you are the boss
I am not a welding specialist ... the best is to check here http://smt.sandvik.com/en/products/w...ielding-gases/
and some other places.

Thanks guys! Yes thinking weather to purge pipes with argon during welding, don't want trouble down the track!
Best regards

Re: Glycol s/steel lines is purging required?
It is generally accepted good engineering practice but if you are talking about large bore pipes 4" and above I would say its an irrelevance. Corrosion is also not relevant as most glycol mixes carry an inhibitor and you did say it was stainless. On smaller pipes I would go for purging if the cost was not too great as the weld can sometimes induce noise and turbulence in the flow pattern. Brian_UK did mention air vents and this is important I would install a Tee piece at the highest point in both supply and return with the Tee being the same dimension as the pipe.
