Mini split leak

I found this York (Johnson Controls) mini split with no gas. There was a leak on the suction line flare on the indoor unit.

So I loosed the flare off, put some of that nylog glue, re tightened the flare and pressure tested the lines. Note, pressure tested with the valves closed so essentially pressure tested the lines only.

Now for my question, was I only to vac out the lines only? Or the whole system? I vacced out the whole system anyway but I wasn't sure how I was going to charge the system with both valves closed If I was only going to vac the lines.

I wasn't sure so I'd thought I'll ask here because It did take awhile to vac the whole system down to 500 so at least for next time I'll know what to do properly, lol.

If there was no gas in the system, that would mean the
outside unit would be full of the same stuff as the lines.

If the lines were contaminated then the whole system was
so vaccing out the whole lot would be the correct choice.

Not too sure the glue on the flare is the option though,
you would have been far better to either reflare or cut
out the last bit of the pipe and braze a new flared section.

Thanks for your reply. I had no other choice to apply the nylog sealant on the flare because if I cut the flare off it would of been too short. The nylog sealant works very well, never had any leaks.

If it was lose there is a likely hood the nut has cracked.
or sheer coincidence

Never great to use any form of sealant on such a small system.

If the flare is crack, your gunna have hell & a mess to deal with after.

I used some bubbles to find the leak.


How come it's bad to use on small systems?

The flare looked fine to me, I think whoever did the install didn't put the flare on properly.
