    Smell from A/C units

Hello is any one else having smell problems from A/C units. The smell is like someone has been smoking a joint/spliff/weed in the room. We have had it on three system now over the last 4 months. The first time we thought someone had been smoking weed in the room and checked around to see if any evidence was about, joint butts etc but nothing then later on another two the same. I know I will get a lot of funny answers but it is baffling us. We even checked if there was a stash growing in the attic etc and nothing. They have all been on Daikin cassettes. Its not the "cat pee" smell you get from some units usually caused by the pseudonymous bacteria but a definite "weed" smell. Perhaps they are arming at a new customer base. I will await the witty answers and hopefully an explanation.

Try sniffing the drain hose from the condensate pumps and you may find the cause....not that I know what pot smells like

    An intriguing post all!

Sweet apples is also the smell given of by someone who has diabetes!

Seriously! A good friend many years ago was seriously ill and no-one was sure what was wrong with him.

Until the Nurses shift changed and one of the new shift who had yet to succumb to the cold / bug prevailing in the Hospital at the time.
Smelt the sweet smell of apples and called a doctor to check for diabetes!
    Which he had!

I digress, but smell still has it's place,
    Grizzly
Despite the High Cost of Living it still remains Popular!

I always used to say what goes in comes out, strong perfumes and aftershaves, BO. smelly feet.
I was once told at a meeting at marstair that certain glossey papers can give off a chemical smell.

Try getting your system cleaned for mould. We use a steam cleaner on our clients ac units. We also run it in the drain system. We then give the unit a chemical wash and the smell has always gone afterwards

    Re: Smell from A/C units

One particular smelly unit comes to mind, in a waiting room:

Dirt was collecting on the fan wheel and the usual maintenance actions would not tackle this sort of thing. I went with the engineer on the call-back and after spotting this dirt on the fan wheel used a regular paintbrush (with bristles cut back to about one inch) to scrub the dirt off of the impeller blades (with cleaner+water).

With a bucket underneath and sheet of plastic to catch the water draining out of unit, managed to get rid of the dirt, and the smells went too.

I don't know how does weed smells but surely when some water in the condensation tray remains due to less angle then it will give out a foul smell. As most frequent causes have been covered by gladstoneair, Good^Man & subcoolfm. The reasons can be many, bacterial, fungal and algae growth on the stuck fibres+mud on the evaporater fins, fan blades, drain pipe and in the condensation tray would be the smell generating places.

I found a dead mouse in a Daikin cassette drip tray. That was a bit stinky. The builder had forgotten to seal the pipe hole entry to the building and the mouse must have walked up the pipe work to the first floor. I think it decided to settle down and sleep as it was probably nice and warm. It then probably got clobbered by the fan or expired through overheating or cooling. Not sure it smelled of weed though

Stick it on Heating, with max temp setting and low fan speed overnight. If its bacterial this is a decent way to kill all the little bugs and smelly blighters?

Deep clean the unit and pumps, replace them if needed and then use the smelly jellies.
