    Old sight glass

    Hi

This old sight glass is looking a bit suspect. Does anyone know what brand it may be and whether parts still available? It is on a level measuring column.DSCN0615a.JPG
    Thanks

It would be either Phillips of Hansen.
You probably only have to replace reflex lens, as the rest of it ok.
Follow instructions on how to install as air has to be releases on installation, otherwise it pops out like one in picture.

    Re: Old sight glass

Thanks for that. From the pdf you posted it looks like it is just the frost shield is working loose. We only have a couple of these sight glasses with the frost shield and they are older than I am so I wasn't familiar with them.
There is a few ton of ammonia behind the glass so I wanted to be sure it wasn't anything serious.
    Thank for your help.

    Hello 45.
the parts are available from realcold if required, Hansen and Henry, a bit of rust treatment on fitting would be a good idea, the trick for fitting the lenses as per ranger1 saves frosting of actual lense. I usually use a reasonable sized peice of copper wire as a a vent when fitting lense then pull it out.
Only ever had one lense leak and that was on a new installation, the seals were installed wrong, Fortunaly was on a liquid column and isolatable, liquid ammonia a wash on the floor from a steady drip. Bugger. Alarms going off their head, usual dramas.
Where abouts are you located in NZ? as per 45 south probably way south Dunedin area.,
45 SOUTH IS OR WAS A NICE DROP OF WHISKEY.

    Not that far South (Oamaru).

The sight glass is next to useless anyway as you need a ladder to see it.

    Hi 45.
Oamaru has done a great job maintaing the old part of town in the port area, brilliant history way back, wheat and wool and meat export port, and the Oamuru stone buildings everywhere.
From memory the first frozen meat export was from a site south of the town, via dunedin on the SS Dunedin frozen meat to UK a squillion years ago, lots of history in your area. Cannot imagine a steam/sail ship and ammonia plant on board a sailing boat going half way around the world. But started a huge export trade ultimately.

You are thinking of Totara Estate http://www.nzmuseums.co.nz/account/3303 . The refrigeration system on those first shipments were steam powered but used air as medium not ammonia (Bell-Coleman refrigeration system)
Going out there tomorrow for Harvest day. Riding out on my Penny Farthing.

    Thanks 45,
excellent connection on Historical start of exporting frozen product from here to UK.,
Send some pics of the Penny Farthing .
Great you are supporting historical events.
As per earlier, we used to drive around port area 40 years ago, thinking this is incredible, history plus, and no one knew about, it was a huge abandoned area. Like everyone just left and everything was still there.

Here are a couple of photos from Totara estate. Anyone with an interest in New Zealand's frozen meat needs to call in if in North Otago.
