    Domestic duct controls

I'm based in Spain and mostly fit Split type units. There is now an increase in new build houses with ducting pre installed for multi rooms. Is there some product on the market which could control opening and shutting grills for rooms not used? I'd like to offer clients the option of separating cold air between bedrooms and lounge.

That's what we us over here. It comes in a set of 3 dumpers, 3 ir control and 3 remote controls.

SAMSUNG Duct-S with zone controller would do it for you and also automatically adjust the fan speed of the ducted indoor unit to provide constant velocity through the grilles/rooms in use....

Samsung Duct S with Zone Controller as The Viking suggested.

CAC Duct S indoor models are:
    AC_HBLDKH - LSP type
    AC_HBMDKH - MSP type
    AC_JNHPKH - HSP type

MWR-ZS00 - zone controller (1 wired touchscreen R/C and damper control box for up to 8 dampers)
    MWR-ZS10 - wired touchscreen R/C for a zone
    MRW-TS - wired T sensor for a zone

You could choose if you want a R/C or T sensor in the zone. If you choose the T sensor, you will have to set the zone temp from the master controller.

However for this solution, make sure that 1 of the rooms will be a master and will be ON, whenever the rest of the rooms need cooling/heating, otherwise it will not work.

    Re: Domestic duct controls

Thanks for your replies. My intention is to offer an after market option with a simple on/off switch to close grills for rooms not needed such as a lounge overnight or bedrooms during the day.

I remember doing a service a few years ago and the system had motor controlled inside louvres at the room openings. It`s something similar to that.

Good idea but there are things that you need to consider.

When all the grilles/rooms are receiving air then the cooling coil (evaporator) is receiving the correct air flow to achieve the design delta T.

If you just shut grilles in certain rooms you will force the excess air into the other rooms which may result in high velocities and / or 'whistling'. You may at this point also cause the duct resistance to go outside of what the fan can handle causing the fan to 'stall'

With less airflow over the evaporator when the fan is 'stalled' you will end up with low suction pressure as the heat absorbed will be less than required for design and eventually, you will have an iced coil.

A good multi room control system will not only shut off room dampers but will also adjust the airflow to suit and reduce compressor capacity.

Another thing to consider with single cooling system/multi room distribution is how you are going to control set point.
