    Belt driven compressors etc

Was told a story recently on using Vee belt drive on compressor which I thought was interesting, as it does not happen every day.
Original design a second stage compressor in a 2 stage ammonia plant.
Compressor was modified to a dedicated first stage or booster compressor & a smaller drive motor installed.
The same amount of Vee belts were used as before, say 8 of them.

Amps were way above motor nameplate as though motor to small.
    Motor checked, all appeared correct.
Remove 4 Vee belts all ok as per design.

    Problem solved

    Re: Belt driven compressors etc

    Hi Ranger
Good article, also if there are too many belts they can flap badly on the non drive side. We found this out many years ago after replacing an old CP compressor, had 8 belts and had problems with rolling and the end ones came off, so we got the supplier out and they determined we only needed 4 belts, problem solved.
